How can I come up with a perfect plot?

There are two very important things when it comes to creative writing: the way it's written and the plot. Today, we'll focus on the latter one.

What's a plot?

The plot of a story will be the sequence of actions or situations that will take place in your story and that will shape the character's behaviour and the scenario in which it's taking place. These are main events that will be developed all over the course of the story and, once they're all interconnected, there's a logical sequence to it that the reader should be able to understand completelly.

How can I improve them?

As in everything that's related to writing, it takes time, consistency and practice to manage everything in the best way and to be sharp when it comes to developing a good and interesting plot. Still, there are some recommendations that can help you improve the sequence of what you're willing to say:

🟣 Write everything down

We often feel inspired and creativity comes along in any second, so what to do with it? Take a notebook with you everywhere you go and whichever idea pops into your mind, write it down. Even if you think "oh, this is stupid", write it down. Then, you can check how to connect it with the rest of your ideas of perhaps leave it aside for other story.

🟣 Brainstorm

This is a very good idea to come up with the unexpected. Try to be in a quiet place for a long while and whatever idea comes to your mind, write it down. You might not be exactly creative at that time, but at least you're making your mind work and after a while, your thoughts will be giving you some great ideas to take into account.

🟣 Define your structure

How are you going to develop your plot? When will your sequence take place and be developed?
The easiest way is to develop the well known three act structure, which consists of introduction, conflict and resolution. As well as this, and if you're willing to write a novel or a longer story, you can even include subplots into your general plot... still, this is a bit harder to manage if you're just beginning.

🟣 Conflict should be clear

This is the vital part of your story: the conflict. Make sure it's clear, well developed and you know how it's going to impact on your characters. No matter if you're writing a short story or a novel, the presentation of this conflict should be disruptive in your plot. One good way to develop it at first if you don't have that much experience, it's the clear good guy vs bad guy and there are hundreds of examples for it, but just to name a famous one: Harry Potter vs Voldemort.

🟣 Background information

Your plot might be really interesting, but if you don't succeed at giving the background information that's needed to understand it, it will probably be really hard to follow. It's important to give details about the characters (perhaps, personality of them, how they look, where they know each other from, etc) and the scenario in which they're interacting.

It's not about writing stuff just because, but giving what the reader needs to picture everything in his/her mind and get the desired effect.

Qué es el plot de la historia?

El plot o trama es la secuencia de acciones y situaciones que se desarrollarán a lo largo de tu historia y que influirán de forma directa o indirecta el comportamiento de tus personajes y el escenario en el que se desarrollan los hechos. Hay situaciones clave que serán descriptas a lo largo de toda la historia y, una vez que estén interconectadas, hay una secuencia lógica que permite que el lector lo pueda entender completamente.

Cómo puedo mejorar mi trama?

Como en todo lo relacionado a la escritura, lleva tiempo, constancia y práctica poder desarrollar todo de la mejor forma y ser lo suficientemente hábil para plantear un plot interesante. Aún así, hay algunas recomendaciones que te pueden ayudar a mejorar la secuencia de lo que quieres plantear:

🟣 Toma nota de todo

A veces nos sentimos inspirados o viene la creatividad en cualquier segundo, qué hacemos con ello? Llévate siempre un cuaderno en el que puedas escribir cualquier idea que surja en tu mente. Incluso si piensas "wow, esto es estúpido", toma nota. Luego, puedes ver la mejor forma de conectarlo con el resto de tus ideas o, mismo, tomarlo para otra historia.

🟣 Brainstorm/"tormenta de ideas"

Esta es una gran técnica para que aparezcan ideas extraordinarias. Intenta estar en un lugar tranquilo por un buen rato, y cualquier situación que se te pase por la mente, anótala. Puedes no sentirte necesariamente creativo en ese momento, pero al menos estás ejercitando tu mente y, luego de hacerlo con regularidad, notarás que se te ocurren muy buenas ideas.

🟣 Definición de la estructura

Cómo vas a desarrollar tu plot? Cuándo la secuencia se desarrollará y de qué forma?
La forma más sencilla de determinar la estructura es usar el esquema de los tres actos: introducción, conflicto y resolución. También, si estás planeando en escribir una novela o un cuento un poco más largo, incluso puedes agregar tramas secundarias y paralelas... aunque eso es un poco más difícil de lograr si estás apenas empezando.

🟣 El conflicto debe estar claro

Esta es la parte vital de tu historia: el conflicto. Asegúrate que está claro, bien desarrollaro y que sabes cómo eso impactará en tus personajes. No importa si se trata de un cuento corto o de una novela, la presentación de tu conflicto debería ser disruptivo en tu trama. Una buena forma de desarrollarlo si no tienes tanta experiencia, es el clásico bueno vs malo y podemos dar mil ejemplos de esto, pero para nombrar uno conocido: Harry Potter vs Voldemort.

🟣 Información de fondo

Tu trama puede ser realmente interesante, pero si no das la información necesaria para entenderlo, lo más probable es que sea muy difícil de seguir. Es importante que des detalle de los personajes (por ahí, personalidad, aspecto físico, cómo se conocen, etc) y el escenario en el cual interactúan.

No se trata de escribir cosas porque sí, sino de dar la información necesaria para que el lector se haga una imagen mental y la trama haga el efecto deseado.
