Is there going to be a 13th public holiday for South Africans or not?

South Africa, Rugby World Cup Champions 2023

President Cyril Ramaphosa said last week during the Green Hydrogen Summit that was held last week in Cape Town that he might consider making Sunday, today, a public holiday should the Springboks win the Rugby World Cup 2023.

The South African rugby team kept their side by winning the World Cup yesterday in a back-to-back contest in Paris, France. They are bringing the cup home for the fourth time. The first rugby nation to get this right.

It was a grueling match between the Springboks and the All Blacks from New Zealand. For 53 minutes, the All Blacks played with 14 men after Sam Cane, the captain, received a red card. They fought back and kept the Springboks on their toes, which in the end resulted in a 1-point difference. It was an indication of why so many players on both sides burst out in tears when the final whistle was blown by referee Wayne Barnes. The end score, 12-11.

Was it a fair win, or is there value in the fact that New Zealanders are not happy with the outcome?

“South Africa won the tight final because they made fewer errors than New Zealand. They conceded their fewest turnovers and had their highest positive outcomes at 80%, compared to the 60% they averaged for the rest of the tournament." This, according to Planetrugby

The white head, Pieter-Steph du Toit, who was also man of the match, made 28 tackles, not in the whole series but in this match alone. As coach Jacques Nienaber said, if you see a white plastic bag flying over a field, you must know it will be Du Toit that will be chasing it.

Handre Pollard maintained a 100% conversion rate and scored all 12 points. Eben Etzebeth, who is nominated for World Rugby Men's 15s Player of the Year, made some of the most ridiculous tackles. All in all, each player in the 32-man squad made a dream for South Africa come true by giving their all through the series. South Africa applauds them.

A big moment for Cheslin Kolbe

There is no better description of South Africa as the “rainbow nation.” As rain was falling in Paris, there was indeed a rainbow of colors jumping for joy in fan parks, restaurants, sports bars, event tents, and homes.

Best of all, there was a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow, the Webb Ellis Cup.

It was Nelson Mandela who said that sport unites a nation. For the last two months, this has been seen in South Africa. Young and old wore their green clothes on “Bok Fridays.” Thousands of messages were sent to the team.

62 Million South Africans stood together and were united.

“The way that they have been behind us from the beginning. There’s so much that’s going wrong with our country; we are basically the last line of defense. There are so many people who come from where I come from who are in hopeless situations. There’s so much division in the country, but we show, as people with different backgrounds, that it is possible to work together in South Africa, not just on the rugby field but in life in general.” Words spoken by South Africa’s beloved captain, Siya Kolisi.

Mr. President, the Springbok team did their part; the nation stood together in unity. It is now time for you to say YES to that public holiday when we welcome the Springboks and the cup back home later this week.
