Share your understanding on Citizenship. |
---|
Citizenship has to do with one's origin, that is where you're from. It is the state or status of belonging to a particular country. For instance, I am from Nigeria, and so, I am a citizen of Nigeria. I am a Nigerian citizen because my parents are Nigerians, and I was born in Nigeria.
For my parents being Nigerians and for the fact that I was born in Nigeria, this automatically makes me a Nigerian citizen.
How can one become a citizen of a country? Explain one way. |
---|
There are ways or methods by which someone can become a citizen of a country. The processes are:
Citizenship by birth
Citizenship by descent
Citizenship by marriage
Honorarium citizenship
- Citizenship by birth: Just like I have highlighted above, one can become a citizen of a country because his/her parents are from that country or because he/she was born there. Like I've stated above;
"For my parents being Nigerians and for the fact that I was born in Nigeria, this automatically makes me a Nigerian citizen."
By this, citizenship by birth stipulates that if your parents or your father in particular is from a particular country, e.g Nigeria, that means you're a Nigerian citizen like me. Or, if, for instance, your parents are from another country, e.g the United Kingdom, and your mother gave birth to you in Nigeria, that means because you were born in Nigeria, you can say that you're a Nigerian.
This also can mean that you have dual citizenship. Because your parents are from a different country, and you were born in a country that's not your parent's country.
Explain 3 duties of a citizen. |
---|
Duties are those things I must do for my country as a citizen of Nigeria. Just like my country, Nigeria owes me some rights. As a citizen, I also owe my country some duties. As a citizen of Nigeria, my duties are:
- Paying taxes: Tax is a financial commitment or obligation imposed by the government on its citizens or residents. For example, taxes are paid from income, like salaries.
Voting during elections: As a citizen of Nigeria, it is my duty to go out and vote during elections. Just like the last election that was held in Nigeria in 2023, I went out to cast my votes despite the toughness of that election, especially the presidential election.
Defending my country: It is my duty to defend my country no matter what may come. That's captured in Nigeria's national pledge.
..." To defend her unity,..."
I'm not expected to speak ill of my country, I'm not expected to conspire with any external forces against my country, and I have to report suspicious movements to the appropriate quarters, (security officers).
