Situation report: Free health screening for women at Beacon health diagnostic centre

It's my pleasure to take part in this contest and I wish to use this opportunity to report the free health care that is on going at Beaconhealth diagnostic centres all around Nigeria , perhaps people living in Uyo metropolis will take advantage of this too.

Cervical cancer and breast cancer are common in women, and perhaps is affects 70% of women and needs to be controlled by women. Therefore, october 19 is a day world health organisation set aside to celebrate international Day against breast cancer and their aim is to create health campaign awareness for women to access themselves and possibly know the effect of cancer and treatment, early detection is essential. Also to give palliative care/support to those women who already suffering from the pathology, this helps them stay positive and strong. And with this reason we at Beaconhealth diagnostic centre has also supported (WHO) in creating this awareness therefore we set aside aside free medical screening for cervical cancer and breast cancer in women.

Breast cancer affect the breast of a woman, it forms in the cell of the breast, when mutations take place in genes that regulate cell growth causing the cells to divide and multiply in an uncontrollable way.

All women are at risk of breast cancer, it tops the cancer chart worldwide and in Nigeria then females are more affected than males.

Risk factors includes:

• Genetic
• Menopause
• Consuming of too much fatty foods
• History of cancer in one breast of a person
• History of ovarian cancer
• Previous lump removal, alway insist for histology test to be done on lump that was removed although not all lumps are cancerous majority are benign but it's good to be on a safe side.
• Infertility upto term
• Smoking
• Alcohol intake, etc.
• Wrong use of hormonal contraceptives such as pills, Postinor 2, implants, injectables can expose a woman to breast cancer.

Breastfeeding of first childbirth before the age of 30 years

• Regular exercise,
• Self breast examination,
• Clinical breast examination,
• Restrictions on diet can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Cervical cancer start from the the cervix which is a part that leads to the womb and it's also connected to vagina. So this cells affect this part of the body

All women are at risk for cervical cancer, It occurs mostly in women over 30 years of age. And it is caused by a long-lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a common virus that is transmitted through sex from one person to another, so if you are sexually active, you may have HPV at some point in their lives, but just few women will get cervical cancer.

Screening tests, treating of urinary tract infections the HPV vaccine can help prevent cervical cancer. Try to go out for screening even if you may feel you don't have it because when cervical cancer is found early, it is highly treatable and associated with long survival and good quality of life so don't be scared of coming out for screening it is free please. We want to help many women as possible to be safe and free of cervical cancer.

Health is wealth we should be aware of the benefits of medical check up and be available to do the screening to avoid late detection that will be chronic.
