The small town called Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay has got a place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of it's old historical quarter. This small town is located by the river Rio de la Plata and only a short boatride from Buenos Aires which makes it an easy day trip from the capital of Argentina. Our main reason to visit Colonia del Sacramento, was to visit the old historic quarter. This part of town is not big, but it's loaded with beautiful architecture, lots of charm and slow pace that made us feel very relaxed. The town still has many well preserved buildings worth having a look at. All of the houses are one storry buldings. But one of stands out because of it's hight. The lighthouse is taller than all the other buildings and can be seen from every corner of the old quarter. Today it is a popular landmark in Colonia.

The lighthouse was built in 1857 on the ruins of San Francisco Convent, but there isn't much left of the convent. In the 1700s it was destroyd because of fire. But some of the remains are still visible. The walls are a contrast to the whitenes of the lighthouse.

It is possible to visit the lighthouse by climbing the 118 steps to the top. Unfortunatly it wasn't open the day we were here. With a hight of 26 meters we could only imagine the view from the top. The light has had been guiding passing ships ever since it was buildt. It still does. When we walked the streets at night the light was visible from all over the old quarter. These two buildings in one, was one of the highlights when we were visting Colonia del Sacramento.
