Hello my dear Steemians,

Today I wanted to invite you to the challenge running by Venezolanos Steem Community:

"Mortui vivos docent" - "The dead teach the living"

When I saw this painting of Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp" it immediately reminded me the time when I started learning Medicine in the University.

Everything in science has its own origin and Medicine is one of the old science that developed itself to high standards all over the world. We collected a huge amount of knowledge about human and our anatomy and physiology, thank this we have now our modern Medicine.

When the students start their first year, it is overwhelming because the students joining amazing world of a interesting speciality, they are all full of expectations and each of us had our own impression how it will be and what we want to learn.

Despite of that the first 2 years are very generic and the subjects continue those in school:

  • we had Chemistry, which is the basis of all chemical reaction in our body and also the interaction and reaction of our body with medicine which consist of chemical substances

  • Physics, another subject without knowing that we can not explain what is happening in different system of human body

  • and one of the important subject is Human Anatomy, that we start learning from the first year and keep going throughout the next few years.

First steps into Human Anatomy

The Anatomy Faculty is very special, once you enter the department you can see few Latin Quotes and, of course, some paintings with anatomy subject. The painting of Rembrandt is one of the popular and well known to Medical Students. It shows the anatomical dissection of human arm by the group of Surgeons.

Quote "Mortui vivos docent" - "The dead teach the living" is one that we learn entering into Anatomy Faculty, when I heard that first time I had a cold shower running along my back and such a strong mixture of emotions:

  • Respect for those who donated their body for anatomy
  • Compassion with the family members of those people
  • Gratitude for their help for young students to study and learn

When we study anatomy we do it through dissection of certain areas of human body using anatomy books but also the practical physical parts of human body. This way the dead are teaching living this is very strong saying and all the medical students know and appreciate that for the rest of their life.

Another strong quote I immediately recall when I see the painting of Rembrandt is:

"Hic locus est, ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitae"

that means in English

"This is the place where death delights in helping life."

You can also see this quote when you entering Anatomy Faculty, that was reflecting the fact that many teachers and founders of the institute bequeathed their bodies to the institute after death in order to serve the benefit of science.

That is what memories and emotions called through this wonderful work of Rembrandt "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp", one of my favourite painting of talented Artist.

I would like to invite @alexey1976, @mytravelandscape, @bambuka for this challenge

Hello @ste1, a great account of when you started studying medicine as a young man, I can imagine the great impression caused by seeing the first cadavers, which are used for anatomy research.

It is strong when you quote the phrase the dead teach how to live and it is very true.

Friend success in the dynamic.

Yes, it was great experience that in the past we did not really understand the significance but with time we often return to those days and our memories become fresh and strong. The opportunity to learn anatomy using practical section was the best way of teaching. Thank you for reading :)

Hola amiga, que bonitas citas, seguro te han de traer recuerdos de tu vida como estudiante, sin duda están muy bien planteadas para la obra que has elegido.

Saludos. Éxitos en el reto 🤗

Thank you for reading and also sharing my thoughts, the strong saying imprints in the memories of students for a long time and that is the whole aim of such subjects to make sure that students remember for a long time.

hola amigo, si ver un cadaver da impresión, no me quiero imaginar estudiar la causa de la muerte de aquellos que donan su cuerpo para la anatomía.
saludos y exitos en el concurso

Yes, it is not easy when you imagine that, maybe that is a reason that not many can imagine themselves working in medical field. The same with my sister, she can not see blood, even her own, she feels sick and she never could imagine her doing anything in medicine, but she is very good in numbers and in accountancy that is something that I do not like. We all have something special and for us, hope many people will be able to figure our something for them :)

Everything in science has its origin and medicine is an ancient science that has developed itself to high standards all over the world. We have accumulated a lot of knowledge about humans and our anatomy and physiology, we had chemistry, which is the basis of all chemical reactions in our body and our body's interactions and reactions with drugs which are made up of chemicals. Your story is about science. Science has contributed a lot to us. . Through science we have been able to move forward. Best wishes to you always @stef1

I am glad that in every culture the people collected the knowledge of how to treat people for their time. Much what we have today is still the same what was in the past. Especially traditional old medicine that is still using the benefits of herbal remedies and fungi, because it is another field that we revive nowadays and benefit too.

hey dear stef your reflection on Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp" is deeply moving and beautifully expressed. It's fascinating to hear about your personal connection to the world of Medicine, and how the Latin quotes within the Anatomy Faculty resonate with profound meanings. The acknowledgment of the donors' contribution and the symbiotic relationship between life and death in the pursuit of knowledge is truly powerful.

Thank you for reading, yes, medicine has a lot from old time and Latin language is still a bridge between now and then. Although it was used more often in past nowadays we do not use it as a language but some of terminology still remain there forever.

It was a nice topic to recall the time of my student being and to live that time again :)

It is really nice to know that you are also studying medicine, I am pretty sure you discovering every day something new for you and hope you will love it more every day.

It seems to be quite long and hard time but everything is relative and within few years it seems like it was so quick time.

I am glad that you also like the quote, I love Latin language that unfortunately is not live language anymore and exists only in few sciences.

Thank you for reading and you lovely comment :)

Greetings dear friend, you tell us a very good anecdote about this painting and your experience as a medical student. That phrase certainly says a lot! The human body of the dead teaches many things to advance more and more in medicine. The respect we have for donors is exceptional, since without them nothing would be known about human anatomy. Many successes!

I am glad that you enjoyed reading my story and that you also share the point of view of old Scientists, who did so much to give us this knowledge also capturing it in this beautiful painting.

Thank you for your nice comment :)
