Jacques-Louis David was a great French painter strongly influenced by the Venetian style. He was born in the city of Paris in 1748 and grew up with the privileges of a prosperous family of the time, ensuring him an excellent education. He was prominent in the neoclassicism pictorial movement.

Jacques-Louis David was very inclined towards art and was never a good student in school. The family wanted him to be an architect, but painting was his true vocation and he managed to overcome the prejudices of his mother and uncles. By the time he was a teenager, his father had died in a duel.

In 1774, he managed to win the Prix de Rome which allowed him to have a scholarship, for four years, to study at the French Academy in Rome.

It is evident the great influence that had the Greek sculptural and mythological models in his remarkable period called "Empire style" with warm colors and severity in the lines.

He became very active during the French Revolution and a leader of the arts under the French Republic of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Among his disciples are Antoine-Jean Gros, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Anne-Louis Girodet and José de Madrazo, among others. Also, he was arguably the most influential painter of French art in the 19th century.

He died in Brussels in 1825 of a stroke.

Below we will present three of his works for you to choose the one that most motivates you to write. The first one is called: "The Death of Socrates " (1787), the second, "Napoleon Crossing the Alps " (1801) and the last, "The Death of Marat " (1793).
