Hello everyone
I'm very happy to attend this week lecture by @yohan2on that center on Compare and Contrast between a Centralized and a Decentralized application. I really enjoy the class and ready to attend to this Homework Tasks. They includes

Homework Task:
Compare and Contrast between a Centralized and a Decentralized application under any of these categories social media, Browsers, Gaming, Finance, Gambling, file Storage, Trading, Charity, etc.

For example;
Steemit Vs Facebook (Social media category)

WHAT IS CENTRALIZED and DECENTRALIZED APPLICATIONS

Many people knows about centralized applications and use it often. But, majority do not know about decentralized application. Centralized applications are applications software with different and many client nodes running and controlled on a central server where they are managed and monitored by a company such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, Snapchat, etc. This individual users or clients have absolute trust that this company is doing things correctly and in your interest. It is not powered by the blockchain technology and does not reward these esteemed clients.

WHILE
Decentralization applications also called Dapps. It does not have a central server run by a company and their data are not monitored by any central body or server rather it is an open-source software applications that run on a peer to peer network connection. Dapps are based on blockchain technology that rewards its clients in form of cryptocurrencies.

There are many centralized and decentralized applications in various categories like:

• Social media: Steemit Vs Facebook.
• Video platforms: Dlive Vs Youtube
• Browsers: Brave browser Vs Google chrome.
• Gaming: EOS racing Vs Need for speed
• Storage/Filesharing: BitTorrent Speed Vs Google drive

Lets compare and contrast all of them and their merit and demerits therein.

Social media Category: Steemit Vs Facebook.

Social media is interactive digitally-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation or sharing/exchange of information, ideas, career interests, and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. While challenges to the definition of social media arise due to the broad variety of stand-alone and built-in social-media services currently available, there are some common features Source

However, social media is online platform where there is interaction of ideas and information between individuals, groups and communities. Everyone is free to create idea and information and share publicly or privately.

STEEMIT

Steemit is a blockchain-based blogging and social media website, which rewards its users with the cryptocurrency STEEM for publishing and curating content, and is owned by Steemit Inc., a privately held company based in New York City and a headquarters in Virginia.Source

However, Steemit is a decentralized application (DApp) which is built upon the Steem blockchain, using the eponymous cryptocurrency STEEM and TRON due to the recently integration of these two digital coins to reward their clients or users for their content creations. These rewards comes in two forms; Author and curation rewards. Author rewards are gotten from the post published and upvoted by other users while curation rewards comes from the various upvoted engaged by the users. All the payout of the various rewards are stored in the user's wallet.

MERIT

• It is run by blockchain technology that rewards its clients.

• It is a decentralized application which means that there is no central server for every clients rather it is based on peer to peer platform.

• There is not data theft as every personal data of every user is not centrally stored where it can be hacked.

• It is very fast due to absence of advertisement Addon and buttons etc.
  

  DEMERIT

• It is absolute new and not popular, not everyone know about it and can't use it.

• since it is Dapps, it does not encourage marketing on their platform.

WHILE

FACEBOOK

Facebook is a most popular online social media and social networking service whose company is based in Menlo Park, California, USA. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, along with his friends at the Harvard School and now has become a global social media applications that runs both on desktops, phones and other electronic gadgets.

However, it is a centralized application whose central server situated at their headquarters at California, USA and does not rewards any of their numerous clients with digital coins for their content curation. Rather, they raked in millions of dollars by serving a advertisement hub for many companies and marketing agencies.

MERIT

• It is a very popular application with over 20 million active users and have improve human relationship and brings many together from far and near.
• since it is centralized application with huge clients' based, it encourages marketing on their platform.
• Majority of their users used this platform for their personal gains like campaigning etc
  DEMERIT
• It is not run by blockchain technology and does not rewards its clients.
• It is a centralized application which means that there is a central server for every clients .
• There is a serious data theft as every personal data of every users are centrally stored where it can be hacked.
• It is not fast with compared to steemit due to presence of advertisement Addon and buttons etc.

VIDEO PLATFORMS: DLIVE Vs YOUTUBE

Video platform provides a forum where users can upload, share videos or live stream their own videos to the Internet. It can be specified either as for the general public to watch, or particular users on a shared network. There may be restrictions on who watch or share and other certain limitions like age etc.

DLIVE

DLive is an American video live streaming service which was founded in 2017. It was purchased by the BitTorrent company in 2019.source

DLive is a decentralized application that based on live streaming but rewards its clients with cryptocurrencies because it is designed on blockchain technology for its servers and donation systems. Although initially, It operated on the Steem blockchain technology before switching to the Lino network and to TRON network when it is purchased by BitTorrent in 2019.

• Since it is a decentralized application, which means that there is no central server for every clients rather it is based on peer to peer platform.

• It is not popular when compared with Youtube, not everyone know about it and can't use it.
• since it is Dapps, it does not encourage marketing on their platform.

YOUTUBE

YouTube is an American online video-sharing platform headquartered in San Bruno, California. The service, created in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees—Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim—was bought by Google in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion and now operates as one of the company's subsidiaries. YouTube is the second most-visited website after Google Search, according to Alexa Internet rankings.source.

However, it is a centralized application for live streaming and solely video contents. It does not run on blockchain technology and does not rewards its clients. But it is popular and globally.

• It is a very popular and global application with over 28 million active users and have improve human relationship and civilization.
• since it is centralized application with huge clients' based, it encourages marketing on their platform.
• Majority of their users used this platform for their personal gains like campaigning etc
  DEMERIT
• It is not run by blockchain technology and does not rewards its clients.
• It is a centralized application which means that there is a central server for every clients .
• There is a serious data theft as every personal data of every users are centrally stored where it can be hacked despite the huge capital for cyber security.
• It is not fast with compared to Dlive due to presence of advertisement Addon and buttons etc.

BROWSERS: BRAVE BROWSER Vs GOOGLE CHROME.

Brave is a free and open-source web browser developed by Brave Software, Inc. based on the Chromium web browser. It blocks ads and website trackers, and provides a way for users to send cryptocurrency contributions in the form of Basic Attention Tokens to websites and content creators.Source

Brave Browser is a decentralized web application software built on the Chromium architecture. It has a cryptocurrency token called Basic Attention token that is rewarded to its users for viewing privacy-respecting ads. It has an Adblocking engine that tracks and blocks harmful ads.

• It is not popular when compared with Chrome, not everyone know about it and can use it.
• since it is Dapps, it does not encourage marketing on their platform.

GOOGLE CHROME.

Google Chrome is a cross-platform web browser developed by Google. It was first released in 2008 for Microsoft Windows, and was later ported to Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android where it is the default browser built into the OS. Google chrome is a centralized browser that serves as a platform for web applications that is built on the Chromium architecture. It’s a very popular browser that is widely used by many people globally while browsing the internet. It has a good extensions feature, it’s faster than internet explorer and Firefox.

  DEMERIT

• It is not fast with compared to Brave due to presence of advertisement Addon and buttons etc.
