Introduction

It's the beginning of a new week at the academy which makes it week 2 of season 3, with no doubt, the academy has been running smoothly since the beginning of the season and I am gals I've attended some lectures which have added up to my knowledge of cryptocurrency. For this week, I've attended a lecture by professor @stream4u which is centered on coinmarketcap, it's a great lecture and I will be attending the task given by the professor. Let's head to the task.

1. What Is Coinmarketcap.com?

Coinmarketcap.com/ is with no doubt a very popular and important name in the crypto ecosystem which came into limelight in the year 2013 having its headquarter in the U.S. Coinmarketcap is a cryptocurrency platform that gives detailed information about verified listed cryptocurrencies in the crypto ecosystem.

iMarkup_20210706_111042.jpg
Coinmarketcap.com/ landing page

In addition, Coinmarketcap is specifically designed for users in the crypto ecosystem to keep track of different assets by revealing the assets' live prices, ranks by market capitalization, the price behavior of the assets over time, the platforms where individual assets can be traded and many other information. In short, the above are a few of what Coinmarketcap does and we can say, it's a platform that gives full information about crypto assets as desired to know by any user.

2. How Coinmarketcap.com is useful for Crypto User/Trader?

I highlighted earlier when I was discussing what the platform Coinmarketcap is, that it gives detailed information about different cryptocurrency assets which range from price, market capitalization and many more usefulness.

For this part, I will be discussing some basic usefulness of the platform as related to different crypto assets. Having said that, these usefulness would be discussed under the section cryptocurrencies and as such, price, market capitalization, Volume (24h), Circulating Supply and assets' chart pattern (7 days) would be discussed. Let's take a look at these features below.

iMarkup_20210706_102322.jpg
Price, volume, market capitalization, circulating supply

iMarkup_20210706_102304.jpg
Last 7 days chart

Let's discuss each of the identified parts in the screenshots above.

Price: Coinmarketcap gives the live price of every asset listed on the platform and with this, users can get to keep themselves abreast of the current prices of different assets. Due to the arbitrary trading that occurs in cryptocurrency whereby we have slight variations in the trading price of assets on different platforms, as such, Coinmarketcap collects trading prices from different exchanges, average it and update it on the platform to give users the live price of each of the assets available.

Market capitalization: Market capitalization is not an exception from the list seen under the cryptocurrency section, and what this means, is the total value of an asset that has been mined. Most people know this term but they are not familiar with its deep meaning, in short, market capitalization is calculated by the product of the total assets in circulation at moment and the price per unit of the asset, and this gives rise to market capitalization. Coinmarketcap shows the market capitalization of the assets available and at the same time ranks them by market capitalization. Let's take Bitcoin as an example in the screenshot below.

iMarkup_20210706_104150.jpg
Bitcoin ranking by Market cap

From the screenshot above, we can see that Bitcoin is ranked number 1 by market capitalization with a value $640, 046, 642, 188.

Trading Volume (24h): Coinmarketcap gives the information as regards the trading volume of an asset over 24 hours as such, it would help traders to get insight into the market of any asset of choice. Speaking of trading volume, this is the actual volume of a specific asset traded on all exchanges listed on Coinmarketcap, the details would be collected and the summation is presented as the trading volume of the asset over 24 hours. For instance, if LTC worth $1000 was traded on Binance, $800 of the same asset traded on Huobi Global, $400 of the same asset traded on Poloniex... This makes the trading volume (24h) of LTC to be $2,200 and that's exactly how the data is collected for all the assets to present its trading volume (24h).

Circulating Supply: The circulating supply of assets is revealed to users/traders on the platform so that they can gain insight into the supply behavior of the asset over time. And by meaning, circulating supply refers to the supply of assets available for trading at that moment. Can we go into the concept of Supply a bit? When supply tends to be higher than demand, then the value of the assets tends to decline, and vice versa. Having said that, total supply should not be confused with circulating supply, as total supply refers to the amount of the asset that would ever be created, note that.

Chart pattern of 7 days: Under this section, the price behaviour of the asset over the last 7 days is represented on a chart that shows different trends of the asset over time, as such, users can see what has happened earlier before making a trading/investment decisions.

Let's talk about other features like; Watchlist and Portfolio.

Watchlist

Watchlist on Coinmarketcap is another great feature that allow users to keep track of their favorite crypto assets to monitor its market behaviour over time. With the watchlist, users can easily have an eye on the assets to see how they are doing before making an investment decision, know that, it's not easy to keep scrolling thousands of crypto assets everyday to check for which is good for investment, as such, the Coinmarketcap watchlist allow users to put favourite coins on the watchlist for easy tracking.

Portfolio

Portfolio is another feature on Coinmarketcap that allow investors to put their assets in one place in the quest to monitor their investment. The portfolio contains assets users have acquired over time and the Coinmarketcap hosts a platform where traders can arrange their assets and monitor their investment on the go.
I'd like to keep the usefulness at this stage for now as there a lot more to be discussed.

3. Explain the Individual Page for each Crypto Coin on CoinMarketCap.

For this section of the task, I will be exploring the Bitcoin asset to check for different available information. The information headings for all the assets are the same, the information contained therein is what differs. The information headings are; Overview, Market, Historical Chart, Holders, Wallets, News, Socials, Ratings, Analysis, Price Estimated. Each of the listed information above would be discussed below.

5. How or when Coinmarketcap.com decides to list a Coin?

My research on this aspect of the task led me to the Coinmarketcap website to see the criteria for listing a crypto asset on the platform. The stages would be sectioned into a few parts below.

1. Know that, the application starts online and it requires the coin issuer to put a few things in place before embarking on the journey.

  • The information to be provided must be truthful and verifiable, this is very essential before starting the process.

  • All claims to be made must be variable before proceeding to starting an application.

  • 2. Criteria: Certain criteria that must be exhibited by the asset for listing would be given below;

  • It must be exhibit leverage cryptography, have a consensus algorithm or a distributed ledger.

  • It must be a peer to peer technology or compatible with smart contracts for the purpose of automated transactions through DApps or for interaction decentralized exchanges

  • The asset in question must have an active website/ blockchain explorer.

  • The asset must be traded on publicly and also must be actively traded on one of the exchanges that has been listed on Coinmarketcap.

  • A verifiable representative from the project with whom Coinmarketcap can communicate with for certain clarifications.

  • 3. Evaluation of the data submitted: At this point, Coinmarketcap would look into the application submitted by the coin issuer through several evaluations and some of which are listed below;

  • Trading volume/market pairs- To see if the asset is actively trading as claimed by the issuer.

  • The use case of the project.

  • Project's community interest/engagement.

  • Project's team, how trustworthy they are.

  • Project's tendency to stay for long and not the one that pack off in a short while. And many other evaluation are made.

  • 4. Listing: Listing on Coinmarketcap is classified into four types and I will discuss them below;

  • Inactive Listing: These are projects that is not actively trading on any of the exchanges listed on Coinmarketcap as such it is considered as Inactive listing but can be reactivated provided that it starts active trading on 2 of the listed exchanges on Coinmarketcap.

  • Unverified listing: These are projects that has their prices surfaced when searched for, but hasn't been verified by Coinmarketcap.

  • Untracked listing: These are projects that do not satisfy the criteria listed earlier but showed strength in the evaluation process.

  • Tracked listing: These are the projects that satisfies all the criteria and the evaluation process, as such they are Tracked listing.

  • Some of the research made in this section comes from here!

    6. How or when Coinmarketcap.com decides to list Exchange?

The process that leads to the decision of Coinmarketcap as regards listing an exchange exhibits a few things identical to that of Coin listing with a few steps but with widely different criteria. Let's look into this.

    1. Online Application: Application for the purpose of exchange listing also start from an online application and as such, the exchange must make sure the information they are submitting is true just like in the case of coin listing.

    2. Criteria: There are criteria for the process of submitting an application for an exchange listing on Coinmarketcap. Let's see some of it below;

  • The exchange must have an active website such that its trading volume must correspond to the its API data.

  • The exchange must have been operating for at least 60 days. The exchange must have an order book that allow users to place buy and sell order and as such keep records on the order book.

  • The exchange must allow people to anonymously view the markets and trading pairs available on the platform without logging in to the exchange.

  • Present a representative from the team that Coinmarketcap can communicate with as regards clarification.

  • Those are some of the criteria that is required to be satisfied in the process of requesting for listing of an exchange on Coinmarketcap.

    3. Evaluation of the data submitted: Of course, there will be an existence of evaluation stage to verify the information submitted by an exchange requesting listing on Coinmarketcap. Let's see some of them below.

  • Trading volume/market pairs- To see if the trading volume corresponds to the exchange's API data.

  • Check for the uniqueness of the exchange that tend to bring more innovation to the crypto ecosystem

  • Exchange's community interest/engagement.

  • Look at the Exchange's team to see their specialty, experience and so on to be sure they are up to the standard.

  • And many other evaluation.

  • 4. Listing: Provided that the exchange requesting the listing exchange from Coinmarketcap satisfies the criteria and evaluation then it would be granted a Tracked listing.

Some of the research made in this section comes from here!

    7. What is the purpose of the Uniswap feature on the Coinmarketcap.com site and how a trader can use it?

Let's begin this with what Uniswap is, Uniswap is a decentralized exchange that allow users to swap ERC-20 tokens of choice without the involvement of third parties in the transaction and it hosts a platform where users can also act as liquidity providers.

The purpose to which Uniswap is incorporated on Coinmarketcap is for users to make a quick swap of their ERC-20 tokens which requires no intermediaries for the swapping process and as such, no verification is required before the user can swap an asset of choice. This option is available to all, to those that are registered on Coinmarketcap and visitors too without restrictions.

How to Navigate to Uniswap and Connect to Wallet

    There are a few steps involved in this and I will be giving them in the list that follows;

  • From the Coinmarketcap.com/ landing page, I located the Swap button at the bottom of the page and clicked on it.

  • The next step is that I clicked on Connect Wallet to connect my wallet of choice.
  • iMarkup_20210706_213129.jpg
    Select swap

    iMarkup_20210706_213601.jpg
    Connect wallet
  • Now, I selected my wallet of choice that I'd like to connect with the Uniswap DEX such that I selected Metamask. And it initializes the process and eventually connected, and I selected Swap.

    iMarkup_20210706_214115.jpg
    Select swap

  • On the swap interface, I selected the token I want to swap for the other which is ETH and UNI as the destination coin.

  • I inputted the amount of ETH for swap, that is 0.5 and clicked the review button. The quote was released and there was an estimate that I get ~51 UNI for 0.5 ETH but I could not proceed because of insufficient balance.

The steps above completes the process of navigating to Uniswap DEX from Coinmarketcap and how to swap.

    8. What is Blockchain Explorer? What Information available under Blockchain Explorer? How many Blockchain Explorer available on Coinmarketcap.com & How it helps users?

    What is Blockchain Explorer?

Blockchain explorer can be termed as a software that utilizes API and some other blockchain nodes to fetch different data from the blockchain and present it a well arranged format that can be searched for easily. In other words, we can term blockchain explorer as a search engine in blockchain technology which allow anyone to search for information or transactions carried out on the blockchain.

Information that can be seen on the explorer

There are a lot of information that can be seen on the blockchain explorer and I will be mentioning a few of them below.

    • Number of transactions for the day.
    • Hash rate
    • Transaction volume.
    • Price.
    • Latest blocks.
    • Addresses involved in transactions.
    • Value of the transaction.
    • Type of transaction (Transfer or smart contract).
    • And many more.

How many Blockchain Explorer available on Coinmarketcap.com & How it helps users?

There are four blockchain explorers available on the Coinmarketcap and they are, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Binance coin. Let's the screenshot below.

    iMarkup_20210706_220943.jpg
    Blockchain explorers- Coinmarketcap

How to use Binance Coin explorer on Coinmarketcap

The process starts from clicking the explorer from the list and other steps involved would be given below.

  • I choose one of the hash ID of the transactions to see its details and the amount of BNB transferred was revealed, the transaction fee, the address that initiated the transaction, the time of arrival and so on.

  • iMarkup_20210706_225212.jpg
    Select Hash ID

    iMarkup_20210706_225124.jpg
    Transaction details

    Conclusion

In conclusion, Coinmarketcap provide all details about cryptocurrencies listed on the platform including the exchanges that offers the assets' trading and that allow users to get detailed information about different assets available in the market. Speaking of exchanges, Coinmarketcap gives details of their services, the credit score and other information so that users can choose wisely.

We can't let go of the Watchlist and Portfolio features without talking about the duo as they help investors to keep track of assets they wish to invest in or the ones they have invested in, as such, they have it in a confined space to monitor their behaviour over time.

And even the DEX incorporated, Uniswap that allow users to make a quick swap of their ERC-20 tokens with no restriction or presence of third parties. Coinmarketcap is generally a place that provides all information about the listed crypto assets. Thanks to professor @stream4u for this awesome lecture. Thank you all.
