Question 1 - What is the Genesis Block of a Blockchain

When it comes to blockchain technology, the genesis block is one of the many technical terms that is mentioned a lot. The name genesis which means first already gives away what the meaning of genesis block is. Genesis Block is basically the first block of a blockchain. There are no transactions on the genesis block simply because the block reward of the genesis block are the first ever coin to be created on that blockchain. We all know that blocks are what make up a blockchain and the genesis block of that blockchain means that first ever hashed block.

In blockchain, whenever a block is mined, the previous block is always referenced, however, genesis block is a very unique block because it doesn’t reference any previous block simply because it was the first ever block to be created on that blockchain. Simply put, new blocks in a blockchain are cryptographically linked to the previous block. There is always reward for mining new blocks on a particular blockchain, however, the rewards from a genesis block most times cannot be withdrawn or retrieved as it was the first ever coin to be created. The genesis block are the origin of the entire blockchain and Block 0 is what is mostly used to refer to the genesis block because every other block that will be created after the genesis block has its references back to the genesis block.

Question 2 - Write on the Bitcoin Genesis Block and its significance

When we talk about the first ever mined block, the Bitcoin Genesis Block obviously comes to mind. Bitcoin needs no introduction in the blockchain space because it was the first ever blockchain to be created and the blockchain that kickstarted it all. The Bitcoin genesis block is the first ever block that was mined on the bitcoin blockchain in January 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, the Bitcoin founder and creator whose identity has not been discovered till this date. On the Bitcoin genesis block, 50 bitcoins was mined and what makes it so special is that those coins mined on the genesis block cannot be retrieved or withdrawn to any address.

Bitcoin Genesis Block is and will always remain the first block of the bitcoin blockchain. It is the first genesis block to be created and is still the most important genesis blocks because bitcoin is without a doubt the foundation of every other genesis block. The Bitcoin Genesis Block or “Block 0”was created on the 03/01/2009 which contains the first 50 bitcoins, and on 09/01/2009 which is six days later, the block that follows next which is termed “Block 1”was created. On the genesis block, Satoshi Nakamoto included a cryptic message as a hex sigscript, which says...

"The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks" This can be confirmed here

To verify the authenticity of the encrypted message by the Bitcoin founder and creator, we need to first decode the Hex value 5468652054696d65732030332f4a616e2f32303039204368616e63656c6c6f72206f6e206272696e6b206f66207365636f6e64206261696c6f757420666f722062616e6b73 to readable text format. To do this we use a special binary hex converter tool to convert the Sigscript to readable text.

Looking at the first transaction that took place on the Bitcoin genesis block on blockchain explorer, we can clearly see the date and time which the transaction first took place. The transaction was included in block 0 which is the genesis block and now, there are 689,980 confirmed transactions. One thing that stands out from the explorer is that the first 50 BTC transaction that was contained on the genesis block didn’t have any value yet and can be seen as $0.00 from the “Value when transacted”.

The significance

There is without a doubt about the significance of the bitcoin genesis block on the bitcoin blockchain. The genesis block was the confirmation that all the work that was put into creating the bitcoin blockchain has come to live and is ready to multiply and grow into what it is today. There are a number of significance of the bitcoin genesis block which are;

The bitcoin genesis block was a proof that the idea of blockchain works and it created the pathway for all the other blockchains that are in existence today.

The bitcoin genesis block showcased the purpose of cryptocurrency and how it operates on a blockchain. This became a proof that cryptocurrency can be used as digital currency and has led to creation of other cryptocurrencies.

There have been a lot of improvements on a lot of industries, sectors and businesses which has adopted blockchain technology and it all boils down to the genesis block on the blockchain which proved that blockchain technology works.

The genesis block proved that blockchain is immutable and transparent.

The bitcoin genesis block brought about decentralization in the financial system today because without bitcoin, the idea of decentralization in the financial system like DeFi, be your own bank, having full control of your funds wouldn’t have been possible without the first successful block which is the genesis block.

Question 3 - Go to https://steemworld.org and locate the Steem Genesis Block

Like every other blockchain, there is a genesis block on the steem blockchain. However, unlike the bitcoin genesis block on the bitcoin blockchain which is called Block 0, the steem genesis block on the steem blockchain is Block 1. Locating the steem genesis block is quite easy and straight forward with a help of an amazing tool known as steemworld.

To locate the Steem Genesis Block, we have to visit https://steemworld.org.

To sign in to steemworld, look for the sign in button on your device and click on it.

There are two ways to sign in to steemworld.org, either using the posting key or signing in via steem keychain. For this step, you can use any method to sign in.

After signing in to steemworld.org, look for the Block Explorer tool and click on it.

By defaut, the steem genesis block number will be the input, if not, type in 1 in the input box as Block 1 is the Steem Genesis Block number.

Click on OK to continue and access the Steem Genesis Block data and information on the block explorer.
