Hallar una entrada al edificio fue más fácil de lo que parecía, sin embargo, entrar no lo fue. En cada una de las caras del pentágono que dibujaban los cinco edificios más pequeños que lo flanqueaban había una gran entrada, lo suficiente como para que grandes objetos, como naves u otro tipo de vehículos, tuvieran acceso al interior, así que tal vez se tratase de otro hangar.

Las puertas, al igual que el resto de la capa superficial del edificio entero, parecían estar hechas de algún tipo de polímero, que, a falta de un especialista en materiales en el grupo, o un dispositivo especializado para determinar su composición, no pudieron identificar, sin embargo, los ingenieros determinaron que perforar su superficie no sería difícil para las herramientas con las que contaban.

Tras una autorización a regañadientes de Saul, quien se oponía a causar cualquier daño a la estructura, realizaron una perforación de cinco centímetros de diámetro en una de las puertas, lo suficientemente grande, como para hacer entrar un pequeño dron de vigilancia del ejército.

El diminuto artefacto, impulsado por levitación magnética, empezó a recorrer los alrededores de la puerta, tratado de encontrar el mecanismo que permitía abrirla, sorpresivamente encontró un par de grandez y robustas, pero comunes bisagras, a cada lado de la hermética puerta, sin embargo, no parecía haber ningún tipo de mecanismo que pareciera mover las pesadas puertas, así como tampoco nada que las mantuviera cerradas.

―Creo que sólo hace falta tirar de ellas ―dijo uno de los ingenieros ―. No hay cerradura ni mecanismo de apertura.

El problema de tirar de ellas era la necesidad de perforarlas, para poder fijar ganchos para hacerlo, y la total oposición de Saul y los otros lideres del equipo de arqueólogos, de permitir que se hiciera algún daño a la estructura. Después de varias discusiones y de comprobar que el material de la puerta no era ferromagnético, por lo cual no podían usarcé magnetos; para anclar los cables para halarlas, Saul convino nuevamente, en permitir más perforaciones sobre las puertas.

Fue necesario anclar dos cables a cada mitad de la puerta, para poder tirar simultáneamente con los cuatro octópodos, después de varios minutos de tirar de los cables y varías patinadas de los octópodos, cullas patas equipadas con escarpas no lograban aferrarse lo suficiente para vencer a las pesadas puertas, se debió tomar la decisión de cortar las bisagras para derribarlas.

Nuevamente el ejército proporcionó la herramienta necesaria para hacerlo, usando uno de los drones de exploración de antes, fueron colocadas tiras de explosivos en cada una de las cuatro bisagras, cuya detonación logró cortarlas con facilidad, luego, usando nuevamente los octópodos y los cables, las puertas cayeron transmitiendo una intensa vibración por el suelo que, en medio de una casi inexistente atmósfera, no fue acompañada por un estruendo que le hiciera justicia.

Tal como las imágenes tomadas por las sondas habían mostrado, los exploradores se encontraron con un pasillo en forma de anillo que bordeaba toda la pared exterior del edificio, decidieron dividirse para cubrir más espacio, así, empezaron a recorrer el pasillo en las dos direcciones posibles a medida que avanzaban encontraron accesos al interior y los fueron tomando de un octópodo a la vez.

El equipo de Saul se aventuró por la primera entrada que encontraron, se trataba de un amplio y largo pasillo, de unos cien metros de largo que acababa en una gran área despejada que coincidía con lo que debía ser el núcleo del domo, los reflectores del octópodo no alcanzaban a iluminar en su totalidad la vastedad de la sala, mientras miraban los vacíos alrededores, pudieron ver llegar por otras entradas a varios cientos de metros de ellos, los octópodos de los otros tres equipos.

―Bien creo que no había diferencia de por cual ruta entráramos ―comentó Carducci, a través del comunicador.

―Miren las predes sobre el nivel de los túneles de acceso ―dijo Saul.

Toda la superficie del domo sobre sus cabezas, estaba cubierta de celdas que le daban el aspecto de un descomunal panal de abejas, si bien algunas de las celdas estaban obstruidas, la gran mayoría estaban abiertas y mostraban un interior aparentemente vacío.

―Usemos uno de los drones para ver el interior de alguna de las celdas ―sugirió, uno de los ingenieros.

Apuntaron los reflectores a una de las celdas y guiaron al pequeño dron a su interior, eran más grandes de lo que desde el exterior parecían, lo suficiente como para albergar dos departamentos humanos regulares, a diferencia del exterior del edificio y del resto de lo que hasta el momento habían podido ver, el interior de las celdas, parecía estar hecho en su totalidad con los bloques multifuncionales, que habían encontrado en la nave y las ruinas sumergidas en el otro planeta.

Recorrieron varias de las celdas abiertas y todas eran completamente iguales y estaban totalmente vacías.

―Algo es seguro, hasta ahora todo lo que hemos encontrado en este sector está relacionado con la misma civilización― comentó Saul mientras veía las imágenes enviadas por el dron―. Al menos todo tiene en común los mismos bloques de construcción, aunque aquí usaron también otros materiales.

―Observemos uno de los módulos cerrados con el escáner de positrones para ver que hay dentro ―sugirió Da Silva.

Unos minutos después, un dron de mayor tamaño, equipado con el sensor del escáner, se elevó unos treinta metros sobre el suelo, en dirección a la celda bloqueada más próxima, su entrada estaba cerrada con los mismo bloques que recubrían el interior de los cubículos, el dron se paseó por la entrada, recorriendo toda su superficie, mientras en el panel de monitoreo del escáner se formaban en tonos verdes, las imágenes de lo que en el interior había, se trataba de una nave sonda, como la rescatada del otro planeta o de las que varias decenas fueron encontradas sumergidas en las ruinas.

―Es otra nave, pero ya esto no parece tener sentido, ¿por qué tantas naves sondas? ―dijo el operador del escáner, decepcionado del descubrimiento.

―Supongo que cada uno de los cubículos cerrados debe contener una ―comentó Da Silva pensativo ―. Ciertamente son muchas sondas, es como si estuvieran en una misión masiva de exploración, asumiendo que ese era su propósito.

―¿Que hay en el centro del domo? ―preguntó Carducci.

―Según el escaneo de positrones, hay un tipo de estructura, del tamaño de un edificio de apartamentos ―respondió Saul ―. Deberíamos dirigirnos allá a ver de qué se trata. Desde aquí los reflectores no permiten distinguirla.

Avanzaron durante algunos minutos en dirección al centro de la estructura, en el camino descubrieron tres naves aparentemente caídas, en medio del terreno, a su alrededor había dispersos cientos de los diminutos bloques multifuncionales, como si de juguetes para armar arrojados al piso se tratase.

El centro del domo estaba señalado por una alta y esbelta estructura, con forma de reloj de arena, coronada por una púa, no estaba construida con bloques, por el contrario, parecía estar revestida uniformemente por algún tipo de metal esmaltado, que, tras una rápida revisión de uno de los ingenieros, resultó ser platino, recubierto por algún tipo de polímero.

―No tiene ningún tipo de accesos o entradas, pero el escáner muestra que hay mecanismos y conductores en su interior ―explicó el ingeniero, tras una pasada rápida del escáner de iones ―. Creo que es la primera vez que encontramos algo que parezca conductores eléctricos, también parecen haber líneas para algún tipo de fluido, tal vez agua, parece que fuera un tipo de mecanismo.

―Que tal si usamos alguno de los drones para que explore el interior, no creo que sea complicado hacer una perforación en su pared exterior ― sugirió Belinda Ichikawa una de las estudiantes de Da Silva.

―Por que no, al fin de cuenta ya hemos alterado bastante el lugar ―convino Saul sardónicamente.

Tras perforar la pared externa, accedieron a un espacio vacío en su interior, en efecto la estructura parecía ser algún tipo de gigantesca maquinaria y a diferencia de todo lo que habían visto antes de los antiguos, aquí parecían haber dispositivos electrónicos y de transmisión energética. El dron empezó a rondar entre la maquinaria, mostrando una tecnología que, si bien no podían entender, no parecía ser muy avanzada, pero sí muy simple y práctica. Rápidamente los ingenieros concluyeron que el dispositivo parecía ser algún tipo de estación generadora de energía electromagnética, pero no podían identificar, cuál era su fuente.

―Que tal si seguimos las líneas de transmisión de fluido para observar de dónde vienen ―sugirió uno de los ingenieros.

Hicieron que el pequeño dron volara alrededor de las líneas y las siguiera, lo que lo llevó a internarse cada vez más en la tierra, yendo cada vez más abajo, hasta llegar a un punto donde su señal ya no podía ser recibida.

― Ha ido demasiado lejos, ya está a más de ocho kilómetros de profundidad, y las cámaras muestran que la estructura se sigue internando en la tierra bajo nosotros ―dijo el ingeniero que lo guiaba.

―Debian estar tomando energía del manto fundido del planeta, al menos sería así cuando lo estuvo ―dijo Saul ―. Deberíamos usar los sensores sísmicos para determinar cuan profunda está la estructura.

―Si concuerdo con el doctor, Leonard y Peter, ayúdenme a instalar el sensor, Matías trae de regreso al dron ―dijo el jefe de los ingenieros.

Tras varios ensayos, el sensor realizó un mapa de la corteza planetaria bajo sus pies, aparte de descubrir que el edificio tenía dos cámaras subterráneas, a las cuales se parecía acceder vía un delgado canal que atravesaba de lado a lado la estructura central a unos doce kilómetros bajo tierra, también encontró que esta estructura se internaba más allá de la corteza, profundizando en lo que debió ser el manto del planeta, tal como Saul había supuesto.

Para el momento de concluir con el mapeo del subsuelo, ya había transcurrido doce horas de que el grupo se había descendido al planeta, se habían excedido por dos horas del periodo que se había fijado como adecuado para trabajar, curiosamente nadie se quejó de las incomodidades de trabajar bajo esta gravedad.

De regreso a la estación orbital, recibieron una interesante noticia. El equipo de técnicos que estudiaba los bloques multifuncionales, descubrió que éstos se enlazaban entre si a través de micro tubos ópticos y diminutos filamentos eléctricos, que conducían, unos información y los otros energía. Además de eso, los bloques mismos actuaban como almacenes de energía, de una forma similar a las nanomáquinas, pero a mayor escala, lo que aun no se entendía era si no había ningún tipo de procesador central o líneas de trasmisión de datos, de donde provenía la información que controlaba a los bloques.

The Ancients (part 7)

Finding an entrance to the building was easier than it seemed, however, getting in was not. On each of the faces of the Pentagon that the five smaller buildings flanking it drew, there was a large entrance, enough that large objects, such as ships or other vehicles, had access to the interior, so perhaps it was another hangar.

The doors, like the rest of the surface layer of the entire building, appeared to be made of some type of polymer, which, in the absence of a materials specialist in the group, or a specialized device to determine its composition, they could not identify, however, the engineers determined that drilling into its surface would not be difficult for the tools they had available.

After a reluctant authorization from Saul, who opposed any damage to the structure, they drilled a five-centimeter diameter hole in one of the doors, large enough to bring in a small army surveillance drone.

The tiny device, driven by magnetic levitation, began to travel around the door, trying to find the mechanism that would allow it to open, surprisingly finding a couple of large and sturdy, but common hinges, on either side of the airtight door, however, there did not seem to be any kind of mechanism that would seem to move the heavy doors, nor anything that would keep them closed.

-I think they just need to be pulled, -said one of the engineers-. There is no lock, no opening mechanism.

The problem with pulling them was the need to drill holes in them, so that hooks could be attached to them, and the total opposition of Saul and the other leaders of the archaeological team, to allow any damage to be done to the structure. After several discussions and proving that the material of the door was not ferromagnetic, so they could not use magnets; to anchor the cables to pull them, Saul agreed again, to allow more drilling on the doors.

It was necessary to anchor two cables to each half of the door, to be able to pull simultaneously with the four octopods, after several minutes of pulling the cables and skidded rods of the octopods, the legs equipped with scarps were not able to grasp enough to overcome the heavy doors, the decision had to be taken to cut the hinges to knock them down.

Again the army provided the necessary tool to do so, using one of the exploration drones of before, strips of explosives were placed in each of the four hinges, whose detonation managed to cut them easily, then, using again the octopods and the cables, the doors fell transmitting an intense vibration through the floor that, in the middle of an almost inexistent atmosphere, was not accompanied by a noise that did it justice.

As the images taken by the probes had shown, the explorers found a ring-shaped corridor that bordered the entire outer wall of the building, they decided to split up to cover more space, so they began to walk down the corridor in both possible directions as they went along they found access to the interior and took them one octupod at a time.

Saul's team ventured through the first entrance they found, it was a wide and long corridor, about a hundred meters long that ended in a large clear area that coincided with what should be the core of the dome, the reflectors of the octupod were not able to illuminate the entire vastness of the room, while looking at the empty surroundings, they could see the octupods of the other three teams arriving through other entrances several hundred meters away from them.

-Well, I think it made no difference which way we came in, - said Carducci, over the communicator.

-Look at the previews above the level of the access tunnels, -saul said.

The whole surface of the dome above their heads was covered with cells which gave it the appearance of a huge honeycomb, although some of the cells were obstructed, the vast majority were open and showed an apparently empty interior.

-Let's use one of the drones to see the inside of one of the cells, - suggested one of the engineers.

They pointed the searchlights at one of the cells and guided the little drone inside, they were bigger than they looked from the outside, bigger enough to hold two regular human apartments, unlike the outside of the building and the rest of what they had been able to see so far, the inside of the cells, seemed to be made entirely of the multifunctional blocks, which they had found in the ship and the submerged ruins on the other planet.

They went through several of the open cells and they were all completely the same and completely empty.

-Something is certain, so far all we have found in this sector is related to the same civilization, -saul said while watching the images sent by the drone-. At least everything has the same building blocks in common, although other materials were used here.

-Let's look at one of the closed modules with the positron scanner to see what's inside, - suggested Da Silva.

A few minutes later, a larger drone, equipped with the scanner's sensor, rose about thirty meters above the ground, in the direction of the nearest blocked cell, its entrance was closed with the same blocks that covered the interior of the cubicles, the drone walked through the entrance, covering its entire surface, while on the scanner's monitoring panel the images of what was inside, was a probe ship, like the one rescued from the other planet or the ones several dozen were found submerged in the ruins.

-It's another ship, but that doesn't seem to make any sense any more, why so many probe ships, - said the scanner operator, disappointed at the discovery.

-I suppose each of the closed cubicles must contain one, -commented Da Silva thoughtfully-. Certainly there are many probes, it's as if they were on a massive scanning mission, assuming that was their purpose.

-What's in the centre of the dome? -Ask Carducci.

-According to the positron scan there is a type of structure, the size of an apartment building, - answered Saul -. We should go there and see what it is. From here the searchlights can't make it out.

They advanced for a few minutes towards the centre of the structure, on the way they discovered three apparently fallen ships, in the middle of the ground, around them were scattered hundreds of the tiny multifunctional blocks, as if they were building toys thrown on the floor.

The center of the dome was marked by a tall, slender, hourglass-shaped structure crowned by a spike. It was not built with blocks; on the contrary, it seemed to be uniformly coated with some kind of enameled metal, which, after a quick check by one of the engineers, turned out to be platinum, coated with some kind of polymer.

-It doesn't have any kind of access or entrances, but the scanner shows that there are mechanisms and conductors inside it, -explained the engineer, after a quick pass of the ion scanner-. I think this is the first time we have found something which looks like electrical conductors, there also seems to be lines for some kind of fluid, maybe water, it looks like some kind of mechanism.

-What if we use one of the drones to scan the interior, I don't think it would be complicated to drill a hole in its outer wall, - suggested Belinda Ichikawa one of Da Silva's students.

-Why not, after all we've altered the place enough, -saul agreed sardonically.

After drilling the outer wall, they entered an empty space inside, the structure indeed seemed to be some kind of gigantic machinery and unlike anything they had seen before the ancients, here there seemed to be electronic and energy transmission devices. The drone began to roam around the machinery, displaying a technology that, while they could not understand, did not seem to be very advanced, but very simple and practical. The engineers quickly concluded that the device appeared to be some kind of electromagnetic power generating station, but they could not identify what its source was.

-What if we followed the fluid transmission lines to see where they came from, - suggested one of the engineers.

They had the little drone fly around the lines and follow them, which led it deeper and deeper into the ground, going lower and lower, until it reached a point where its signal could no longer be received.

-It has gone too far, it is already more than five miles deep, and the cameras show that the structure is still going into the ground beneath us, - said the guiding engineer.

-They must be drawing power from the planet's molten mantle, at least they were when they were, - said Saul -. We should use the seismic sensors to determine how deep the structure is.

-If I agree with the doctor, Leonard and Peter, help me install the sensor, Matias brings back the drone, -said the chief engineer.

After several tests, the sensor made a map of the planetary crust under its feet, besides discovering that the building had two underground chambers, which seemed to be accessed via a thin channel that crossed from side to side the central structure about twelve kilometers underground, it also found that this structure went deep into the crust, deepening what must have been the mantle of the planet, just as Saul had assumed.

By the time the mapping of the subsoil was concluded, twelve hours had passed since the group had descended to the planet, two hours had been exceeded by the period that had been set as adequate for work, curiously no one complained of the discomfort of working under this gravity.

On the way back to the orbital station, they received some interesting news. The team of technicians studying the multifunctional blocks discovered that they were linked together by optical microtubes and tiny electrical filaments, which carried information and energy. In addition, the blocks themselves acted as energy stores, in a similar way to nanomachines, but on a larger scale, what was still not understood was whether there was no central processor or data transmission lines, from which the information controlling the blocks came.
