FPL GW 36 Analysis - Goalkeepers and Defenders || the-gorilla

Having once again given you my brief thoughts on how Gameweek 35 went for me, it's time to quickly review our ongoing selections.

Edouard Mendy played his 5th match (again) since being chosen and returned another decent score of 11 points despite only play once in the Double Gameweek. A total of 25 points over a 5 Gameweek period is decent and means that we've done ok with the Goalkeepers that have now been Archived.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jonny Evans were the 2 defenders to have completed their 5th Gameweeks and scored 37 and 31 points respectively, despite Evans having no involvement in Leicester's Double. These make the Defenders Archive look much more respectable.

As ever, the past performance of my picks is available at the end of this article.

Time to look toward the end of the season though and as usual, I'll pick up to 2 players in each position -

  • the primary pick based upon all analysis
  • a cheaper pick if the primary's a premium option.

So we'll begin with my custom metrics to review which teams we should be considering:

I included Arsenal in the list purely to show how Man City, Liverpool and Everton stand out between now and the end of the season. I won't be considering Arsenal players in my analysis due to their blank this week. Their players could be appealing for Gameweeks 37 and 38 though.

Goalkeepers

Ederson (£6.1m), Alisson (£5.9m) and Pickford (£4.8m) have all nailed down the starting spots at their respective clubs, which makes our budget pick easy as Pickford's the only option in this regard. There's almost nothing to choose between Ederson and Alisson - Man City's defence is more solid but Liverpool have the better fixtures. There's just £0.2m between them and the deciding factors for me are Alisson's 10 bonus points to Ederson's 3 and the fact that Liverpool have more to play for with a Champions League spot still the target.

💲 Jordan Pickford

Defenders

As usual, I'll include all players who have played recently from Man City, Liverpool and Everton.

Having topped the charts for a couple of weeks and been overlooked due to other team's doubles (if the Man Utd fixture had been announced a day earlier, he'd have been our premium pick last week), there's nothing to stop us picking Trent Alexander-Arnold this week. He's so far ahead of everybody else that it needs little thought and about this much explanation.

⭐ Trent Alexander-Arnold

This moves us on to our budget selection and despite the selection looking fairly clear to me already, I'll filter the list to sub £5.5m players.

Nathaniel Phillips was already sitting pretty in 2nd place and per 90 minutes, his xG+xA wasn't far off Alexander-Arnold. With Matip, Van Dijk and Gomez all out and Kabak struggling with an injury, Nat Phillips has done well and has luck on his side - his own goal last night being credited to Bruno Fernandes. There's a risk that Kabak could return but it looks like Klopp's moved Fabinho back into Midfield so Rhys Williams will be the man to make way. At £4.1m, there's not a huge amount at risk here.
