Today in history: The first Frisbee!

in #history8 years ago

Hello Steemians!

Welcome to today's episode of the "Today in History" serial, where I bring you daily historical facts and events of the current date.

On January 23, 1957, the first ever batch of Frisbees came out!

The Frisbee has its origin in 1871. , when William Frisbie opened the Frisbie Pie Company in Bridgeport.
After eating the pies, the local students would throw the empty tins to each other and yell "Frisbie!".

Totally unrelated to the Frisbie Pie story, Walter Frederick Morrison and Warren Franscioni, invented a plastic disc they called "Flying Saucer" in 1948.

The original design by Franscioni and Morrison

Morrison made an solo improvement on the saucer in 1955. eventually selling it to the Wham-O toy company labeled as "Pluto Platter".

In December 1967. the company renamed the toy to the name "Frisbee", accordingly to the pie company, but misspelled the name of it.
The re-branding came with a patent by Ed Headrick who was named father of the Frisbee.

Multiple sports were invented around the Frisbee, Ed Headrick himself invented the so called Disc Golf ,or Frisbee Golf, where the goal is to toss the Frisbee into a metal basket.

In 1968, Joel Silver along with others of his fellow students of Columbia High School in New Jersey, started developing a game called Ultimate Frisbee, today known as just "Ultimate",m a mix between football, soccer and basketball.

Wham-O was a successful company who knew how to market their products.
The Hula-Hoop, the Super Ball and the Frisbee were just some of the successful products of Wham-O.
They began marketing Frisbee and it's sports heavily, resulting in over 100 million Frisbee's sold by 1977.

In 1994, Wham-O sold the original Frisbee to the Mattel Toy Manufacturers, who has the right of the today today as well.
Over the world there are probably hundreds of producers of different models of the Frisbee, from professional ones to the specialized plastic discs for dogs.
