Excremento Fine Lignum Unum: A Brief History

in #history7 years ago

While perusing YouTube for something interesting, I came across a video entitled "A History of the Toilet," I shit you not. Being a well rounded fellow with a multiplicity of interests, I immediately hit play. Although the video was only mildly interesting, I did learn the origin of one of my favorite expressions that has fallen into disuse of late: The shit end of the stick. The saying is usually in response of one's having fallen upon hard times through no fault of their own, or having gotten a raw deal in some manner. When these things occur, it is said that they have been handed the shit end of the stick. I was surprised to learn that the expression goes back to ancient Rome.

This is a photo of an old Roman public toilet (that appears in the video as well). If you notice there is a trough that runs in the front. The Romans were ingenious engineers. The waste falls into another trough below (not shown) where water runs constantly. Not being wasteful of good drinking water, the "flush" water comes from waste water from public baths, etc.. The trough in front contains clean water and after one finishes one's business there is a stick with a sponge (please see top photo) that one uses to clean one's derriere. Given that these toilets are at public arenas, there is usually someone waiting for you to finish (The Romans didn't share our desire for privacy when it came to bodily functions). You would, out of respect, hand the cleaning wand to the next person handle first. If you didn't, they would necessarily, get the shit end of the stick.

Thanks! I posted this as an afterthought not expecting to even get many readers.

I discovered much of this when researching the toilet habits of muslims, after working with one at my job and repeatedly finding turds snaked over the seat of the toilet, and sometimes on the floor. It turns out, they get their feet up on the seat, do their business, and then they wash their ass in the sink. So, if you are sharing a sink with a muslim, wash your hands somewhere else, before you eat.

I also learned never shake left handed. The video is really pretty good. The Japanese really have turned the toilet into something special.

You can tell how advanced a culture is partially by how their toilet facilities operate, or don't. Perhaps you've seen people trumpeting the magnificence of Dubai? Well, it turns out they were too busy praying to take classes in plumbing and sewage management. Here is what happens when you give the third world more oil money than they have numbers to count, and don't teach them how to "handle their sh*t".

Unbelievable! They need to get in touch with the Japanese, except I doubt it would help. They may have progressed financially, but culturally they haven't evolved past 622!

Maybe someone there should start a movement.

Smiling and chuckling here...

Thanks for handing us the clean end! ;) 😄😇😄

@creatr

You should add a TIL tag to your post. It sounds like this qualifies.

I've heard the "shitty end of the stick" before, same thing. :) I did not know the origin though.

I also posted another metal tree post you might like just FYI, some cool bands in there that don't get a lot of U.S. coverage.

Cool...I've been watching some alternative Brutish history today so I haven't been on much

I see what you did there. Well played.

Thanks...at least somebody got it!
