Amsterdam Then & Now #4 : Old convent & school at Cornelis Troostplein

in #history6 years ago (edited)

Let me challenge you a little and ask you to spot the differences with me. And I don't mean the things like "one photo is in black and white and the other is in colour", but I mean serious changes that they made to this building in Amsterdam over the last 80+ years.

This building was originally build to be a convent and school complex as part of the Catholic Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. During World War II, this building became part of a darker story...

(today)

In 1941/1942, the Germans seized these buildings to turn them into barracks. It received the name "Tulpkazerne" (tulip barracks) after the then chief of police and NSB-er Sybren Tulp (NSB = Dutch Nazi Party). From this moment, this location was the base of the auxiliary police that was part of the NSB. Many razzias (Nazi police raids for rounding up jews and members of the resistance) were organised from here which led to a huge amount of deportations and murders in the city of Amsterdam.

In 1944 the police fled from this location and soon after, the Germans started using it as a shelter. In 1945, after the surrendering of Germany, the Marechaussee took office. Nowadays, part of the building is used by the Amsterdam police and the rest is used by restaurants and offices. They recently renovated the complete building to make it suitable for restaurants. I am very happy with the opening of Loetje, this is a very popular restaurant serving amazing steak so very welcome in my neighbourhood!

Regarding the above photo:
You can imagine that as soon as the Dutch were liberated from the German occupation, they wanted to get rid of the name "Tulpkazerne" as soon as possible. That is what the below image shows. In 1945 a person climbs the ladder to remove the "Tulp" name and raised the Dutch flag, while a large crowd watches.

Well, for one the photo in the right is in colour while the other's in black and white...

can someone explain to me how I downvote this guy? :P

Upvoting me is probably not how you do that 😁

Maybe that triggers other people to help me mass-downvote you ;)

Oh my god this actually happened to someone I like a lot. A steemian that only does good things for the community... is there any way to turn that around? @hendrix22

Amazing how they changed the entrance, it's a dramatic change!

Yes, I love the newer entrance! Not very fond of the extra window in the tower, though...

It really seems out of place the window
