The Crumbling Tombs above Fez

in #history6 years ago

The Merinid Tombs sitting on the hills above the city of Fez were constructed around the 14th century to house the dead royalty of the Merinids which were the big dogs in the house between the 13th and 15th century.

Before the construction of said aforementioned tombs they interred their dead at the Chellah in Rabat which I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago.

The interesting thing about these tombs is nobody knows much more than that, there's never been an archaeological exploration of the site, it's just kind of there... no shiny plaques or security dudes telling you not to touch stuff. There's people climbing it, having picnics, a few herds of goats and sheep grazing in and around it.

Nobody seems to pay much attention to it and it seems such a weird thing to think about when in Europe or especially North America we put everything in a museum that's older than our grandma.

Don't hang around there too close to dark, it gets kinda sketchy pretty quick but during the daytime you can get a pretty awesome view overlooking Fez.

You are absolutely right. In America there would be a million safety precautions and you wouldn’t be able to get close to the ruins,, much less climb them. Nice post.
