Reconstruction of the Hjortspring Boat

in #history6 years ago (edited)

When I was at the National Museum in Copenhagen with my Steemit friend @vcelier we saw a lot of things among them the Hjortspring Boat, a kind of war canoe with a rounded bottom without a keel and some spectacular bowsprit. The boat was found in south western Denmark, but was built somewhere in the Baltic countries. It is from around 350 BC - the period called pre-Roman Iron Age, but it is very similar to the images of ships from the rock carvings of the Bronze Age.

Today I fell over some pictures of a reconstruction made by a boat guild in collaboration with the very knowledgeable Danish maritime archaeologist specialising in experimental building of pre-historic boats

Here is the boat guilds page (in Danish) : https://www.hjortspring.dk/

I was looking for a video clip of this boat and this very dark Viking bit of comedy popped up :-)

Well, it is the same impression you get if you read about the end of the Joms-Vikings. It was all about going out with style.

The guys who used to use this boats for real everyday work must have had arms like trees, man...

I think that the learned believes that it was a war vessel. Those arms would have carried axes.

I have never seen a ship like you mentioned, I very rarely go to sea, even museum very far from where I live,

It is a very old ship so it is seldom seen. Denmark is one big archipelago, so we have the sea near us all the time.

Roman raft boats that are immortalized in carvings and still in use today are watered in Denmark.

The Romans never came this high North, but the age is called so because it was before the Roman empire. It is also called: Celtic Iron age sometimes because it was at the time of the Celts, but the Scandinavian areas was not inhabited by Celts either as far as we know.
