The Wannsee conference: A beautiful scenery with a disgusting background (warning: disturbing images inside)

in #history6 years ago

One of the things that is always good to do when you are in a different city is visit some historical places. I am in Berlin (Germany) at this moment and I have a week transportation card. This means I can travel around all I want with the train, bus, subway for just $30. It lowers the boundary to actually go to a place. The weather was nice, I wanted to go outside so I went to Wannsee, a beautiful lake in my area here.

'Wannsee, dont I know that from something?'

Yes, you might know this from your history classes and that is exactly where the nastyness comes in. So its time for a warning now, last chance!!!!

Terrible Images coming up, click away if you dont want to see the bad part of humanity

So the building that I visited to seen above here is actually a musuem now. With no entrance fee and easy access by public transportation it is very easy to visit.

Why is the building so famous then?

Because in the meeting on 20 January 1942 in this same building here, the whole SS-nazi toplevel decided here that the Germany 3rd Reich should go over to mass destruction of Jews. In two hours in the diningroom a group of 20 guys decided that it would be better to start exterming Jews on mass scale. Just over dinner. Like it was nothing. Again, in this building.

Here you can see pages of the original notes that were created that day. What it is written about is how they are trying to minimalize the spreading of Jewish blood in Europe. 'Mischlinge' is how they call them, a child of a mixture of Jew and German parents or grandparents. Per percentage of Jewblood there is a different discription of what should happen to them. 1/8th Jews blood, consider them German, yet only sterilize them so they can not reproduce. 1/2 Jew blood, consider them as Jew and send them to 'the East'.

I dont know how your World War 2 history is, but sending people to 'the east' meant that you were sent to a mass extermination camp. Yes, just like an insect. Deported and gassed. With thousands at a time
And all of that was decided was over dinner here in this building.

Here you can see Jews in the mass destruction camps dig their own grave while the nazi soldiers are observing them. After digging their own grave they most likely would get sent to the gaschamber and then back to their freshly digged grave. These kind of situations were created at the Wannsee conference, because the nazis found that the extermination of Jews was not going fast enough by just shooting them.

This is after the digging... This can only make you silent, right? I was really disgusted from it, even though I have seen these types of images already so often in our history classes. It was so strange if you think about it a bit deeper. I was in a building where this type of decision was made, unbelievable!

Wannsee Area

Actually the surroundings of the Wannsee are super beautiful and that makes the contrast of this horrifying piece of history even more awkward.

Screenshot_20180516-195343.jpg

In the back on the museum is directly the Wannsee itself. I sat on a little bench outside here to reflect a bit and look around. Also in the direct area of the Wannsee had a lot of wealthy Jews living there before the conference. You can also imagine what happened to them. I got visions of people being chased out of their very big houses in this beautiful area and then being lined up as animals to be deported.

Screenshot_20180516-195133.jpg

You can see it on this type of picture. Very wealthy, neated trimmed, highly educated people being forced all to leave. Most likely they didnt look this anymore quite fast.

Art in the camps

What would happen most of the time in the camps is that the sick, the elderly and the children would be separated from the men and fit women and immediately would go to the gaschambers. This because they were unsuited to work in the camps as temporary slaves. Some of these workers would stay longer in the camps. Expression your opinion was highly forbidden and making art even more.

Luckily some pieces of art were made and recovered. Even though the image is gruwesome, actually the art is very beautiful quite often.

The Museum

As I said earlier this museum is free of entry charge which I find is really good. This type of history deserves to be told (unfortunately), and nobody should be making money out of that. All the information was in German and in English everywhere (very convenient when you are in German language school), and also they had audio tours in all kinds of different languages.

Screenshot_20180516-195240.jpg

Easy to read right? Yeah but again the story told by this image is just as horrifying as all the others that are inside this building.

So if you are looking for a piece of history to leave with a good vibe-> Absolutely do NOT go here, because this place makes you feel so humble that you can live in freedom now, that it is almost scary.

The place is certainly worth a visit, this story deserves to be told and never to be forgotten.

If you want to visit the Wannsee conference, take the S1 or S7 trains to Wannsee and then bus 114. Opening hours from 10.00-18.00

All photos were taken by me from the images that are exposed in this museum

This post was made on masdacs which allows you to crosspost on Steemit, the Whaleshares page and Golos. With only one button click posting on three pages at the same time. Cool right??

I can't find any words for these Nazi crimes happened... Just sad, and I pray this kind of disgusting crimes will never ever happen again !

on this scale was soo super crazy ofcourse, but we have to admit that in other places in the world still stuff like this happens on a smaller scale (also based on randomness: religion/race/ location where you live)

I do always find it so strange that our grandparents living then and that they were still normal afterwards, as in not traumatized for life

Even stranger when you think about, that the most of them did let these awful things just happened...

Peer pressure and also have a gun pointed on your head are factors to not to rule out i guess.

In the end self-preservation is something that makes people do aweful things I guess?

agreed

Oh of course I did not stop scrolling, because I am way to curious, and wanted to read it anyway. These things get to me... disgusting.. seeing those poor people digging their own graves .. gets to me :(

Same here... thats why I took the time to sit outside for a bit..

Disgusting disturbing and awkward..

And stuff that we should learn so much about!

I am speechless. The atrocities that were perpetrated in the name of a superior race boggle the mind. What is interesting is Hitler's biological grandfather on his father's side was presumed to be Jewish. There had to be some reason he had such a hatred...

I didnt know that!

Yeah hatred does such strange stuff to people, it literally can blind them from all reality.. happening all over the world still but in a smaller scale tho.. :(

people, there are no bigger bad or and anger. Things like this always make me feel so sad. How can you ever imagine taking part of something like that? Imagine you are german and lower your self to do this, what has driven them, how could they loose there mind for such a little peace of you know what. A time to be never forgotten.

"Als je een leugen vertelt, groot genoeg en je blijft het herhalen, zullen mensen het uiteindelijk gaan geloven"
Goebbels

Denk dat dit er veel mee te maken heeft wellicht?

ongetwijfeld, maar er zullen wel meerdere factoren zijn. :-)

Definitely not an easy read but it pays to look back so we can remind ourselves of the dark history. And how we can prevent that to repeat.

Exactly, and the time is reaching now that the veterans from them are not able to tell their stories anymore.

We can not forget these types of things just so short of time ago

The truly terrifying part is that this could happen tomorrow!

I am not convinced that as a species we have learned enough lessons that should be obvious to us. If this was not reason enough for us to completely shift direction and change our path, nothing will be, right?

We need to stop waiting for the previous generation to make appropriate atonement or the next generation to make things better. every single person on this planet has enough common sense to know that...

  • Love is better than hate.
  • Sharing resources is better than stealing them.
  • Tolerance is better than bigotry.
  • Children should be protected at all costs, not just children either!
  • Peace is infinitely preferable to war.
  • World leaders are selling us ALL down the river.
  • Genocide is the most abhorrent thing who can conceive of a reason anybody would come to it as a conclusion?
  • NO MAN SHOULD EVER KILL ANOTHER MAN!

Every last one of us has the upmost responsibility to say ...

"Not in my name"

If our governments, leaders, owners do not accept the way we know the world should be run with compassion and love, then they must be removed. Can we even conceive of something this heinous and catastrophic ever being allowed to happen again? (Take note of the 2 words that I have boldened.)

@karinxxl I have to be honest, I wish I had not stumbled across this just before going to bed BUT that is exactly the point isn't it? this should be required reading for us every single day to ensure this level of hideous barbarity never be allowed to flourish in the world ever again. It would've been easy to not read further, to look the other way because it is unpalatable but that is hypocrisy of the highest order and stands against everything I just wrote!

I don't suggest we dwell in it but accept it as part of mankind's past that cannot ever be repeated and learn from it as we try and come together and build a happier, peaceful, tolerant world.

Seems a strange thing to say (I know you will understand my meaning) this was a fabulous post that serves as exactly the kind of reminder that I keep referring to. Thankyou.

Thank you so super much for your opinion @stevenwood ! You are right, the whole idea of this post was to be gruwesome, to create awareness that these types of horrors are not that long ago nor not that far away.

That being said, what I fear is that in the end i think human race will go under to its own demise because of ego, because of the feeling of being better than another. Because some person/ group believes that they are better and the rest should go down.

I really think this is what will happen in the end. And yes, we should never accept it. But consider the consistantly repeating of the message making it 'truth' in a lot of peoples minds, consider the peer pressure from a group, and consider the danger you might bring yourself in when you refuse.

I dont think humans need a lot of input to do horrible things, as history proves that we are easily capable of this (not just wo2, but think vietnam, syria, afghanistan, congo etc etc etc). And therefore it is a good thing to see these types of images to remind us that we should act normal and love and support each other

I am an eternal optimist even when evidence to the contrary shows itself repeatedly, I choose to hope for more from my fellow travelers on this path.

Those of us who feel enlightened (for want of a better way of putting it) have a duty to do as Gandhi said;

"Be the change you wish to see in the world"

Sometimes a smile can return doubled and this can have a ripple effect, I realise how simplistic this sounds but we have gotta start somewhere, right? When colleagues and workmates mention their belief that we should (as mainstream media suggests) go and bomb the latest nation that is deemed a threat I question how exactly they think bombing cities, towns, homes and schools is gonna help exactly?

If people begin to think and question these paradoxical ideas more with a rational mind a new consciousness can be born into existence. This should lead to better informed people questioning the powers that be more and deciding this is not the path that we the people wish to pursue in our name.

I am sure a compassionate approach from nation to nation will win more hearts and minds than a missile every-time!

Full on agree bro! It all starts with ourself and our surroundings!!

Letting it happen is also being guilty

Love museums, especially the ones that show history. Its good to never forget about our history! Upvoted :)

Thx crys! Yeah Im not a museum person at all myself actually but I was blown away by all this horrifying stuff

This isn't an easy story to read, but I thank you for sharing it nonetheless. We should never forget nor do I think we ever will.

Thank you for clicking through though. Its true, this is a terrible piece of history what we all should be ashamed about, but we shouldnt silence about it!

wow it's great to know about those hidden places and get to know about the history that cannot be repeated! This should create some awareness

Yes, it tend to get a bit more to the background ...well, not entirely everywhere. Im from Holland my self and we still celebrate liberating day every year. But also this is getting less postive attention because most of the veterens who helped with the liberation are slowly passing by age now...

so yes it is good that museums are still there for us to not forget!

Unbelievable this actually happened..... :-(

I see you are Canadian! You guys helped us get liberated in that time even. Yeah these years were dark pages of history. And even more weird that 20 men decided this over dinner like it was nothing,,,just there...were I was standing..super strange
