Hermann Gets A Girlfriend But Gets Shot Again
Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
We're in a series about the Wild West and the incredible story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.
He's now 17 years old at this point in the story and has become a full blown warrior who hates and fears the White man. And in fact, has taken many a scalp.
Yesterday's post
In the last post Hermann's tribe continues to wage war on the buffalo hunters who were decimating their main source of food and supplies, the buffalo.
His band was also attacked by a group of whites which they successfully repelled and he was wounded in the leg but made a complete recovery.
Today's post
After that attack on their village they moved because obviously their location was known and more whites would come, probably with the army.
The countryside was thick with soldiers and Texas Rangers hunting for reservation escapees and bands who had refused to go on the reservation.
I think the army and Rangers were supposed to take Indians back to the reservation but it seems way to many just slaughtered any Indians they came across.
Can't we all just get along?
Both sides hated each other with a passion. The Palefaces didn't understand the Indians and the Indians didn't understand the whites at all.
And it is still the same today to a large extent, these seemingly irreconcilable differences. Different mindsets, values, outlooks, philosophies, belief systems, traditions, ethics.
Hermann has a flame
In spite of the struggle to live in freedom and avoid capture, daily life continued in the villages including courtship, marriage and childbirths.
Hermann was interested in girls by this time in his story and he liked a young maiden who also liked him. (Unfortunately he didn't give her name).
The girl's father didn't like Hermann though, and warned him to stay away from his daughter. But by the girl's invitation he went to her tepee one night. When he asked the maiden about her father she told him that her father wouldn't do anything to hurt Hermann, he just wanted to scare him.
Green light!
So she convinced Hermann that it was safe to be with her. Well, after some time had passed Hermann felt a good kick in his back, it was the girl's father! He filled the doorway of the tepee. Hermann made a quick getaway under the bottom of the tepee on the backside.
He ran around one direction but the father ran around the other way and sent an arrow at him when they met. The arrow struck him in the knee and he went down. The girl rushed to his side and scolded her father for treating Hermann so harshly.
The father apologized, removed the arrow and even offered his daughter to Hermann in exchange for just two horses! Hermann didn't accept the offer at that time and later distanced himself because he wasn't ready to get married.
In the next post I'll talk about what Hermann learned about marriage and infidelity in the Apache and Comanche tribes.

Lol. This is actually quite funny. I can just see him being shot with an arrow and it tells me he wasn't cross with him as he went for the legs. I would have thought by now he would have gained the respect of most fathers looking for a brave son in law.
haha! it IS a pretty funny story although he said the arrow in his knee hurt like hell! Yes I agree, you would think so
but probably some still didn't like the idea because he was white. But you bring up a great point sir cryptoandcoffee!

This is one thing that baffles me about relationships in young people though.
What is the aim of a relationship if not marriage?
And why go into one if you are not considering marriage? 😃
Howdy sir hermannsol! Well the old adage of boys will be boys applies here and most will
take any kind of sexual satisfaction they can get when they're teenagers but I suspect Hermann's girlfriend was probably ready to get married. But to answer your question of what is the aim of a relationship...it is usually very different between males and females.
For teenage males it's gratification and fun but for the female it's generally relationship driven.
That's right..
For men, it has always been about gratifying their desires..

Not exactly a great start to a relationship with your father-in-law. It was probably a wise decision not to trade horses for the girl.
It probably was a wise decision, he said he was scared to get close to girls after that!
And understandably so!
This should be made into a film.

But I must say that I don't like Hermann very much. Is he going to ever understand that he is 'white' too? :) Oh and he was a funny man. He killed so many people but he was not ready to get married.. very interesting!! :)

Howdy Martina! Hermann is a very unique case. I don't know if I like him but I admire his adaptablility to survive. At 17 years old he was acting like a typical teenage boy, at least the selfish kind we have here, just out for as much fun, excitement and gratification as possible. I can't speak from experience but I've watched teenage boys and their behavior my whole life.
I don't know if he ever understands that he's white or not. I am writing my version of the story as I read his so I'm not ahead of the posts on this story. All I know is that he said he was a Comanche for the rest of his life and stayed in contact with the tribe. I don't even know what the next post is about. lol. All I know is that he survives the warfare.

Probably not sir fotosdenada, not at all. He said the incident scared him away from girls so I guess he wasn't tempted to take the offer but it sounds like an amazing offer to me because he said she was beautiful!
