Frank Moves To Houston And Goes To War With The Press

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about one of the top Texas Ranger lawmen to ever wear the badge, the great Frank Hamer, who was brought out of retirement to take down Bonnie and Clyde.

Recap

In the last post Frank got hitched to Mollie and was ready to move on with his career. He was getting antsy and bored because he'd brought the town of Navasota under control and calmed it down to a point where it was peaceful.

He'd accepted an offer from the Houston mayor to work for $100 a month, which was a decent wage in 1911(about $2,700 in today's dollars).

Today's story

So off he and Mollie went to the big city. It was exploding in population because it had become a hub of oil refineries for the recent need of gasoline for cars and trucks.

12 oil companies had moved into the Houston area, doubling the population in the last few years.

Tall buildings were springing up, as tall as 16 stories, which people thought were "Dangerously tall!" lol. It was the tallest in Texas.

Cars, electric trolleys, and horse drawn buggies crowded the streets. Houston had 80,000 people and growing fast. Crime was also exploding. The police department was overwhelmed.

The wealthy mayor hired a team of 6 Texas Rangers, some with brutal reputations, in an attempt to send a message to criminals.

Frank was one of them. They reported directly to the mayor, not the police department. The mayor used them for special protection details and investigations but the newspapers didn't like the looks of it one bit.

The articles started appearing shortly after Frank arrived, calling the ex Rangers "The Wild Bunch" and accused them of all kinds of misbehavior. A few of the other men were indeed pretty wild and crazy and liked to beat people up or shoot them.

They were out of place, this wasn't the Wild West anymore. The problem was, Frank was lumped in with them and named in the articles.

Well, that didn't sit well with Frank. He was raised with a code of honor in which if someone insulted him they were going to have to answer to him in one way or another.

After about 5 months of reading the articles and Frank warning them to stop telling lies about him, he'd had all he could take.

Frank gave them fair warning

The paper's editor said Frank told him, "I notified this paper some time ago that if it ever wrote anything against me I would fix somebody. The next one of you fellows I see on the street, I am going to smoke him off the earth!" (or at least teach them a lesson they'll never forget!)

It ain't long before Frank makes good on his word, the story continues in the next post.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Wow, what a difference. From an almost "wild west" town to a big city. Even the pictures show the difference.

I agree sir wwwiebe but that isn't Frank's calling or destiny. He's fixin to head back West again.

Frank's world was certainly changing! Pretty cool to see those old photos of Houston and that big billboard for 5¢ cigars

lol..I know, can you believe 5cent cigars! wow. That's why $100 a month was pretty good money back then. His world was changing but the city life is very temporary.

And my kids wonder why I am shocked by some of today's prices. Not that I remember 5¢ cigars, but I do remember 5¢ Hershey bars and I did make .85 an hour plus tips(usually less than $5 a day) at my first job, and I remember buying 29¢ a gallon gas when I first started driving.

lol..exactly. I remember the .29 gasoline and you used to be able to buy some candy with 5 or 10 cents, some candy was 1 cent. You could eat at McDonalds for like a dollar. lol.

Wow! You guys are old hahaha.

Hahaha! We should have our own tribe.... If only any of us were smart enough to figure out how to do it! @papilloncharity

haha! What would we call that, the Old Geezer Tribe?

We could have Geezer Tokens!

Hahaha, agreed Lady Melinda, but on the serious side it would be dream tribe if ever it was formed.
Blessings!

Who is the most computer literate old geezer? Let's find someone to do it!

lol! Howdy sir papilloncharity! What did gasoline used to be in Africa, was it dirt cheap at one time? Hamburgers here used to be .50 and now they're $6.00.

We call gasoline "petrol" in Africa Sir @janton and it was around 50 cent per liter. Now it's around the R16:00 mark per liter.
Frightening indeed!

So S. Africa has to import all it's gasoline apparently? THAT would suck.

Mornin’ Cowboy! That must have been an exciting move for Frank and Mollie to the big city.

It will be interesting to see how Frank makes good his word about the articles written about him.

That's coming today redheadpei! it kind of messes up his stay in the city but he doesn't belong there anyway. Mollie loved the city but he didn't.

Ah! I remember the shocking change from farm to big city so well Sir @janton.
In Frank's case it will be trying to drive a square peg into a round hole Lol
Blessings!

Exactly. How old were you when you went to the city sir papilloncharity?

13 years old Sir @janton.

Were you just going to school or did you get a part time job too?

@janton
Nope, no part time job so just school. Me and and my two sisters.
My gran also stayed with us during the early years , but she died just after my 13th birthday. My mom was the sole breadwinner and I left home at an early age to make things easier for her.
A sad and bad story that I don't want to discuss here my friend.
Blessings!

Oh boy! I am glad you already posted the next chapter, because I can't wait to read what is he going to do, lol.

Howdy Miss Lena! Well I didn't want to have too long of a post because I know people start skimming after just a few hundred words so I split it up and it worked out because you didn't have to wait!

Hiya janton, it sounds like the big city was just like a wild west town only bigger. I wonder if the big criminals were the biggest complainers of the Rangers.

Howdy angiemitchell! Probably, it seems like the biggest trouble makers are always the biggest complainers too for some reason!

Haha damn poperazi! Can't wait to see what he does

Howdy sir badger! I didn't recognize the new profile image, what is it?

It's a badger! Got sick of staring at my own face all the time 🤣 not as handsome as yours!

Oh I see the Badger now, I had to click on it to bring up your page, yes very cool! But you are so wrong about the face thing! lol.
