Captured By The Apache: The Role Of Women In The Tribe Part 2

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about the Wild West and the story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas. However, yesterday I got off Hermann's story to talk about what life was like for the women and girls of the tribe.

The problem is I ran out of time and space so I'm finishing that history lesson today and will continue on with Hermann's remarkable story in the next post.

Apache women were the pillars of the tribe. They maintained and passed down the Apache culture, traditions, and history to the next generation and in addition to being the teachers they also built the houses, made the clothing from hides, gathered and stored food for the winter using baskets which they made and raised crops if they had a camp which they were staying in for a long period of time.

They were also the healers who prepared the many herbal treatments and of course bore and raised the children. In Apache culture they also had the choice of becoming a warrior and fighting alongside the men if they chose. Below are photos of a few Apache women that I found:

Howdy Janton! How is your Easter Friday? Sorry I couldn't make it yesterday; I got home late and i was exhausted! But now I am finally here. Although I was on Steemit for hours and now it's getting late. I posted new recipe, that you will love for sure, because it's guilt free dessert, lol.

Anyway, I am catching up with everything and saw my name, wow! How intriguing is that. I mean everything is mind blowing about these women; there were capable doing so much! However, I cannot imagine why an Apache girl would have an European name. In addition, she was a daughter of the Chief, so you would think, he would gave her tribal name. It's another puzzle, I guess, just like Victorio, lol.

Fabulous writing and photos! As a woman, myself, I really enjoyed learning more about the role of women in the Apache culture! Thanks for sharing!

Howdy thekittygirl! I'm so glad you found it interesting, I was fascinated too. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Fabulous old photos! Thank goodness those exist. We can learn so much from them.

Howdy again Melinda! yes I'm totally fascinated by them, so interesting and I'm glad you enjoy them too!

Good evening janton, I can see that the apache girls and women were very happy to have their photographs taken. I have also heard that the women in indigenous cultures were always the shamans and healers. Something that we have forgotten.

Howdy angiemitchell! oh it's such a shame that we lost all the knowledge of their healing treatments and herbal knowledge. It seems like each tribe were very gifted in something that all of society could benefit from and instead almost all that knowledge was lost.

Mornin’ Cowboy @janton. I’m totally enjoying reading about the Apache women and their role. They really were the pillars of the society. I hope they were treated well and respected.
The women made beautiful baskets and needlework on their dress.

Howdy redheadpei! Well I don't know how they were treated back then, I haven't really found much about that
except Hermann said that in his tribe the men were mean to their wives. But hopeufully it was different in other
tribes. Maybe that's why they spent their time making beautiful baskets away from the men.

It reminds me of words of my colleague from my vert first place if work. I was young and very inexperienced, besides had problems in my marriage, and she was very wise. She told me: in a marriage up to 90% depends of a woman. I didn't believe her, it sounds like so.eone's dream.
But know ... I think she was right 😊

Howdy Sir @janton some great historic pictures here.
One wonders how they felt when they were forced to adopt the western customs. Anger, hatred, helplessness, resignation and all of the other ills.
A proud nation for sure.
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! yes, all of those feelings for most of them. I talk to one of them on steemit and he
says the tribes still hate the white man!

Howdy Sir janton, I think it is deservedly so, as how would you feel if someone just walked in and took over your home?
And in some cases even your wife?
So sad!

Howdy again sir papilloncharity! oh yes, I've always been for the causes of the Indians over here. People talk about reparations for the blacks and what they suffered which is great but that pales in comparison to what we did to the indigenous peoples and they are the ones who should be compensated with reparations in the form of some of the rich, fertile forested and farm lands that we kicked them off of.

Our government owns an excess of land, millions of square miles of it and they aren't doing anything with it, some of that should go back to the tribes.

Totally agreed Sir and it's starting to happen here, but of course there is a twist in the tale. The land at first belonged the a nation called the Khoi San. Natives from Africa moved in and kicked the Khoi San off some parts of the land. Then the white settlers moved in and after a few wars against the natives, claimed all of the land. Then the UK moved in after gold was discovered and a war against the settlers and they claimed the country.
And so South Africa became a colony of the UK and a formal Union was formed in 1910. Then South Africa gained independence from the UK and a Republic was formed.
Now I ask you, who should receive restitution of the land?
According to me, the first in line should be the Khoi San. Their original parts of the land should be restored to them, then the natives and that should be that.
But there's more to this!
The natives want all of the land claiming to be the only true Africans and nobody else should have a right to any land.
In the meantime white farmers have been here for generations and now they fear that they stand to be dispossessed by the new "Land restoration without compensation" laws.
How's this for a mix up?

I apologize for the lengthy reply, but there's no other way to tell only a part of the story!
Blessings!

Howdy again sir papilloncharity! Thanks for that history lesson, I knew that South Africa used to be a colony of Brittain but didn't know the previous people there. And I follow several fellow South Africans on steemit so I'm keep abreast of the horrible situation with the white farmers and what they face. It's a nightmare.

And the current corrupt government, wow, what a disaster.

Are there still Khoi San people there? They probably have no voice though.

I wonder if anyone in those old photos had any idea of how well preserved they would be?

Howdy sir d00k13! That's a great question! I'm sure they would be shocked at finding out that they were in a very rare group of photos from that era of history and highly sought after. And they'd be doubly freaked to know that people from all over the world study the photos!
Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Yea buddy no worries 😉

I can’t even image how you would go abouts trying to explain it to them 😅 freaked is right.....

yeah, it'd be worse than trying to explain cryptos to the average guy on the street!

That’s an excellent comparison 😆
