Butch and Sundance: Harry Plunges Full Bore Into Crime

in #history5 years ago

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
I'm in a series about two of America's most famous outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. These boys need some serious slapping around or at least a good butt kicking to get them to wake up!

They've both proven that they can live a successful life without resorting to crime. They are both friendly, good-natured, talented, charming, thoughtful..both demonstrating character and a degree of honor....they are both gifted in their abilities with horses.

But apparently they are also both addicted to the idea of fast, easy, big money even at the risk of their freedom and very lives. Butch has already been sent to prison and even though Sundance/Harry vowed to live a lawful life he went and changed his mind and decided he didn't want to work for a living after all!

Belle Fourche

The town of Belle Fourche, South Dakota was a thriving cattle town located on railroad line so it was a main shipping point for the region. By the way, Belle Fourche is fancy French words meaning "beautiful fork" because the Redwater River and the Belle Fourche River come together there. It's a fine sounding name, I must admit. It rolls off the tongue very nicely.

I looked it up to see if it still existed:

They still have cattle roundups! Looky here:

The town had an annual celebration and reunion for Civil War veterans, the year was 1897. The gang knew the bank would be full of cash from all the visitors and spending going on. Harry and some criminals he'd gotten to know decided to hit the bank after this had been going on for a few days.

Ok, that was logical but unless they waited until it was over it also meant that the town would be chock full of people, many of them soldiers or ex soldiers.

The plan

Harry's gang had six men. They rode up and tied their horses at the side entrance of the bank. Two of them sauntered over across the street and tried to act like they weren't bank robbers. lol. Inconspicuous is the word. Not exactly an everyday Redneck word but that DID come to mind so I think it fits here. So yes they hung out looking inconspicuous and nonchalant like.

One of them stayed with the horses. Three of them pulled their six shooters and burst into the bank which had two tellers and five customers. They told everyone to hold their hands up and put their money in a sack which one of the men collected.

A teller pulled a pistol from under the counter and aimed at one of the robbers. He even pulled the trigger but when the hammer came down it didn't fire so he dropped it and put his hands back up in the air. When the robber whirled around he didn't fire because the clerk had dropped the gun.

Might as well had The Three Stooges do this job

Across the street a shop owner happened to look up and saw the bank customers with their hands in the air so he ran outside and started shouting "They're robbing the bank!" When the three men inside the bank heard the yelling they fired a shot in the air and the two men across the street who'd been trying to look like non-bank robbers pulled their guns and started hollerin and shootin in the air.

Obviously the plan was to fake everyone out. At this point they were trying to act like drunk cowboys celebrating. The only problem with that is it scared the trash out of their horses who started bucking and having a fit.

The three men in the bank panicked and took off running and mounted the horses, but it took them a little while because the horses were so spooked. Five of them rode off. A sixth one could never get his horse under control and the horse finally bolted away and ran like hell after the other five horses!

(it probably didn't help that man number 6 there was drunk and wasn't very coordinated at the moment)

A rough escape

So the five rode out of town. When they realized that they were only five instead of six they stopped on a hill on the edge of town to look and see if number six was coming. This gave the townspeople a chance to start shooting at them with rifles. The town's blacksmith grabbed his rifle and was riding up toward that hill when one of the townspeople shot his horse out from under him.

The five never saw man number six so the figured they better get the hell out of Dodge and rode off. The posse was in hot pursuit. At one point the Sheriff got close enough to get a good rifle shot off and shot Harry's horse out from under him. The gang didn't come back for him and he was on foot.

Not exactly a Butch Cassidy planned heist

All things said and done, this was a pathetically planned robbery. The only cash they got was from one of the bank customers who was depositing $97! lol. So far Harry has shown zero talent for this line of work.

Butch always trained his horses to be fine with gunfire for one thing. And I don't think he would have planned the robbery that way in such a crowded situation.

I think it's interesting that ten years before in 1887 was when Harry made his first dumb robbery(that horse with the J brand) at the VVV Ranch which was just 12 miles from Belle Fourche.

After ten years he hadn't improved his craft much. He's on foot and headed to the outlaw country of Hole in the Wall, Robber's Roost or Brown's Park where Butch has spent much of his time.

I found a photo of Harry. I think this was a few years later than this point in his life after he had some successful robberies, but it's close. He was about 30 years old when he participated in the bank job at Belle Fourche.

Does he look like a criminal? He looks more like a banker. Or is that the same thing?

Yeah is the same thing... criminal... banker... yeah... ahahahah

ha! Howdy blacklux! I thought that would get some responses but none until you agreed with it. Maybe people like their bankers! I think they're kinda like blood suckers or leeches.

I have been to Belle Fourche a couple of times. It is kind of an attractive little burgh (all of them in the Black Hills tend to be). It had it's part to play not only in Harry's life of crime but prior to that when the Black Hills gold rush was on and the Sioux took umbrage with the white incursion into their hills. Lot of History in that sleepy little town.

You seem to be giving me the just right dose of this every day. I'm really liking it.

howdy sir bigtom13! Thanks for the kind words. Man you been everywhere! lol. Well I think Belle Fourche is real close to the Devil's Tower isn't it? There are alot of landmarks and historic places in the area. Yes the Sioux didn't like the gold rush because we greedy white boys didn't care who's land it was, we was goin for the gold!

So it sound like Belle Fourche stayed a small town which is kinda nice if you ask me. And you pronounce the name of Fourche like you would touche? the che sounds like shay?

What's up @janton. Been away for a while and just wanted to touch base with the folk I enjoy reading. Great post as always. Harry should have gotten into a different line of work.
I have been to the Badlands in North Dakota, what beautiful land.
I can remember the different colored rock running horizontally through the landscape. I have never been to South Dakota, is it similar.
Have been trying to find some free time to get back to enjoying the friendships I have struck up here on Steemit. Pre, actual, and post holidays were a ball. Couple that with the planning and preperations necessary for me to get off of the mountain, and head south, have consumed most of my time.
Will be leaving on the 26th of this month, and will be enjoying some sun and sand for awhile.
Not sure how much involvement I will have while away, so I just wanted to let you know I haven't dropped off the face of the earth.
I hope to get back to enjoying your work at the first available moment.

Keep up the great work buddy!

Howdy sir bogsweed! so good to hear from you..I was beginning to wonder but I just checked your blog and see that you posted last Friday so I'm behind. You're going South on vacation? But the winter time is so much fun where you're at. What with the redneck stove and beautiful snow and all! lol. Well it'll be great to hear from you when you get back, I bet you'll have some tremendous posting material! And thanks so much for catching up with me.

I love the winters, but as in all good relationships there must be some compromise. My wife is a beach and warm weather soul. She loves the mountains , but needs to vacate the area for awhile during the winter.
She tends to get cabin fever around this time of year.

howdy sir bigsweed! Oh I see..well then it will be good to get into some warm weather, how far South?

I don't remember the movie including all the early bumbling and prison time. Did it? I have not seen the movie in many many years, so maybe I just don't remember. Great addition to the story. I do love the way you write it and you dole out just enough each day to make it easy to read and keep me wanting more!

Howdy Melinda! thank you for reading and for the kind words. Yeah the movie didn't show anything about the early years or either of their prison times so you aren't forgetting anything. It's been at least 30 years so I need to watch it again too so I can talk about any more blatant mistakes they made! lol.
Also, I'm trying to keep the posts at 1,000 words because the researchers say that's the limit of most people's attention span.

I'm sure 1000 words is sad but true, but even more so here where everyone has many more posts they want to visit and a limited amount of time I looked on YouTube and the movie seems to be available there for a couple dollars, but there are lots of free clips from the movie if that helps

Howdy tonight Melinda! Thanks for checking on the movie, it's so old that I figured it might be free but I guess not. A couple bucks is fine but I hate giving my card number for a one time deal. Yeah I'm probably stretching the posts with the 1,000 words, probably should go down to 800.

I buy everything online, even my groceries and don't think twice about putting in my credit card number. I guess I forget that that's even a concern for some people. I will certainly appreciate your kind of caution if I ever get scammed! Credit card companies these days are so good about keeping an eye on what they might think are fraudulent charges against your card and canceling it immediately and putting a new card in the mail for you for the next day that I just trust the they have the power to take care of things!

Well I'm a little paranoid that's for sure. Mrs. J had her number stolen a few years ago and it took awhile to get that thing straightened out so she doesn't want me using any cards anywhere for anything! lol. But your view is a reassuring one and I'm sure they're safer than they've ever been.

They have a very good idea of where I spend my money and how much my purcheas are. When Jim and I would travel we would call and tell them the states the card was going to be used in. Or if he was using his credit card to make a major purchase he would call and get it approved with them first. my card has never had a fraudulent charge against it, but his did twice. He would get a call from the credit card company saying your card has been cancelled someone just made a $22 purchase using your card in New York City and we will have a new card with a different number FedExed to you tomorrow. They really were on top of things.
Not a very productive day for me here. Netflix just released a new season of Grace and Frankie and I simply can't resist that.

howdy tonight Melinda! That's very interesting about the credit card company, what one was it? Because that sounds like extraordinary service!
What is Grace and Frankie, never heard of that one. But does netflix have the Butch and Sundance movie?

So Harry has his horse shot and the others rode off without him? How does he get away, or does he get caught? Maybe that's your story for tomorrow. Some funny lines here... "Might as well had The Three Stooges do this job" Loved it! Voted and resteemed :)

haha! thank you sir Keith! well, I guess he hitch hiked over to one of the hideouts. I don't know what the details are about when he got his horse shot out from under him but for some reason they didn't see him in time or they didn't want to risk getting shot going back for him but evidently it was a wooded area and he was able to escape on foot, I think the posse assumed that he'd been picked up by one of the other gang members.
Thanks for the kind words and the resteem, I appreciate that!

Hi janton, haha this is a comical chapter in your ongoing story. I am waiting for some clever behaviour of real criminal substance to happen! lol. Harry is not a fast learner is he?

haha! No, Harry isn't a good thief at all so far! But, Butch is a very good planner so when Harry gets with Butch things will change and Harry will be the Sundance Kid.

Howdy steem-plus and thank you for the upvote and fine platform!

Harry cleans up nicely. I can’t believe how the gang bumbles the robbery. Alcohol must have been heavily involved.
I agree with the length of your posts...good not to make them too long.

Howdy today redheadpei! Probably right about the alcohol! lol.
I try to keep them around 1,000 words because the research shows that the attention span of most people is about that length.
