Butch and Sundance: Bitter Butch Strikes Back

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in the middle of a series about two of America's most famous and successful outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In yesterday's post we discussed the quest for amnesty that Butch was engaged in and whether he might be repentant for his crimes... or was he just out to save his own skin?

Unfortunately it was the latter because he immediately started stealing again. From the Union Pacific railroad of course. Obviously he was angry and bitter because he thought he'd been snubbed when the railroad officials didn't show up for the "peace talks" that had been arranged.

Of course, Butch couldn't have known that the officials were delayed by a storm and their escort had gotten lost on the last leg of the trip.

The Tipton job

At 2:00 AM a Union Pacific passenger train was pulling out of the station after taking on water at Tipton, Wyoming. About a mile out of town the engineer felt the barrel of a Colt 45 against his ribs. He turned to see a masked man who ordered him to stop when he saw a bonfire alongside the tracks at the next mile marker.

Waiting at the bonfire were three more men with Winchester rifles. They ordered the conductor to unhook the passenger cars from the engine, mail, and express cars. That order was followed and the passenger cars were left behind as the train pulled ahead for awhile before being ordered to stop again.

They meet up with an old "friend"

The robbers escorted the conductor and engineer back to the express car where the safe was kept and ordered the messenger inside to unlock the door, which he refused to do. Does this sound familiar? lol. The boys put a stick of dynamite under the door and gave the messenger one last chance to comply.

The door slid open and the gang burst out laughing. It was their old friend Charles E. Woodcock from the other train robbery who had refused to open the door. The whole car was blown up when they set off the dynamite to open the door! lol.

I guess he didn't want to go through that again, it was a bloody miracle that the guy survived such a terrible blast.

Here's what that car looked like if you missed the other post:

The boys blew the safe open with more dynamite and unloaded bags of cash and jewelry.

The getaway

The boys mounted up and rode off along the railroad tracks. When the train reached the next town the conductor used a telephone to alert authorities who dispatched a Sheriff and an engine on the tracks where the boys had been seen riding.

That turned out to be a ruse to misdirect them though, the boys changed direction out of sight. More posses were alerted and sent out, communications were much improved. One posse got close but after riding 120 miles from the hold up site they were exhausted and had to stop for the night. They had seen three men and a pack horse climbing up the side of a mountain.

No one did it better

They got up at dawn but after they'd ridden most of the day, 35 miles, they came upon a group of tired, worn out horses. It was Butch's classic strategy of stationing fresh horses along the escape route and the boys were long gone. Dratts! Outsmarted by Butch again.

The gang members for this job were Butch, Sundance, Harvey Logan and Ben Kilpatrick. Four of the core members of the gang. And here's a photo of them here. Back row on the right is Harvey Logan. Front from left to right is Sundance, Ben Kilpatrick and Butch:

Lets get the calculator out again

The amount stolen? An amazing $55,000. Amazing because translated to today's value it would be equivalent to an incredible $1,700,000! The year was 1900. In a time when cowboys and ranch hands made $50 a month, you can see why that was a breath-taking haul.

For Butch this was payback for the railroad rejecting his offer, which they didn't but he didn't know that.

If he really wanted to send them a message and let them know he was serious about reforming, he should have let the train go after the safe was opened and tell Charles Woodcock to let them know they could do this all year long unless they wanted to come to the table.

Or, take the money and send them a message saying lets talk and I'll bring the money back. But no...at this point he was in no mood to negotiate.

In the next post Butch and Sundance continue their crime spree.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

PS- things you would never hear a redneck say:

Has anybody seen the sideburns trimmer?

PSS- that joke is so funny to me. The other day when the internet repair guy showed up he was the quintessential Redneck. The guy had a full, red beard which was grown out about 3 inches starting from the top of his ears on his sideburns. Slow Texas drawl. Jack was going crazy smelling his overalls because his dogs are Hound Dogs. lol.

They really seem to have this train robbing stuff down! And it is so funny that Woodcock was on this train, too!
It seems to me that the majority of men in Wisconsin have big bushy beards.

Howdy today Melinda! Yeah I bet when Woodcock felt the train stop and then start and stop again he had to know what was going on! lol. Hey, up there a full beard would be a good protection for your face, especially if you were in a job that you had to work outside huh. an outside job in the winter in Wisconsin, no thanks! I wouldn't be able to do it.
Hows it going for you today Melinda?

Poor Woodcock! I think they portrayed him really well in the movie. I don't know what he really looked like but I think the character that they had in the movies couldn't have been more perfect.

My dad did construction work and was outside every single day of his life. I remember the first time that he was using a crane that had a heater in it. He thought he was in heaven. All the iron workers and guys that he worked with, I sincerely have no idea how they did it.

It has been a good day here. We are having an ice storm right now and it's getting a little treacherous out there. It will be interesting to see what morning brings.

Howdy tonight Melinda! wow, I don't remember him in the movie. Ok, I just found that scene on youtube. lol..that was perfect yes. I bet that's so close to how it really went down too. The only photo that I could find which looks like him is this one:
olqe3quiv3.png
But I don't really know, can't find any confirmation of it anywhere. He was a significant enough figure that you'd think if there was a photo it would be in the state archives or somewhere but not that I could find.

About the cold, yes when I was a kid and a little older our tractors with cabs didn't have heaters and that was brutal. I figured the cranes would have them but I guess it took them awhile to get them installed.

The weather sounds scary as usual! lol. it's only supposed to get down to 68 degrees tonight and 80 again tomorrow so it's a little freaky for this time of year.

I went to watch the YouTube clip, too! They did portray him well, I think. He was a loyal employee, that's for sure!

I envy you your temperatures. I am growing very weary of winter.

What a good payday. $55 000 divided by the gang members surely would have been enough to virtually retire on in those days. Greed will eventually lead to a crooks downfall though as they always want more.
Charles.E. Woodcock knew they weren't joking and have no idea why he even hesitated. will wait again for the next janton episode.

howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! yes sir, they've done this time after time with these huge robberies and even after splitting it up they could have comfortably retired weathly many times but usually they just squandered the money. In fact, one of them, I think it was Harvey Logan, would just go to a brothel and stay there until he had gone through his share with women and whiskey! lol.
That's true about Woodcock, lol..poor guy had to be sweating it but he HAD to have known like you said!

Howdy there steem-plus! Thanks so much for the upvote and for everything you guys are doing to help others!

Hi there @janton , this is probably the quickest anyone has ever responded to any of your posts or it might not be when I finish typing this. The joke about sideburns is relevant. Rednecks have sideburns just as @smithlabs has his knowledge of everything, both are not willing to drop their thing :D

Plus, please go and check the quick post I just made, that is going to be my entry for powerhousecreatives , let me know if I should go ahead with that short and simple post or should I go with another different one

howdy there hananali! sorry I missed this comment two hours ago but I think we got it all straightened out about the posts. @smithlabs is a total redneck with huge sideburns! He wouldn't know how to trim them if he wanted to and I'm sure he doesn't even have a trimmer. He might know what one is if you showed it to him in a Sears catalog though.

That is like an identity for the rednecks, smithlabs is doing fine at that, I am sure he knows about the trimmer but might not know how to use one, he would still know how to fix it though.
He has sideburns and knows everything, who's more of a redneck here? :D

hahaha! good one sir hananali! yes, if you look up redneck in the dictionary or online smithlabs picture is on there! lol. He probably wouldn't know how to use the trimmer but he could fix one or even build a better one! lol.

haha He can actually make a better one I am sure but will not use it on his own sideburns, guess why? He wants to stay to what he is and wants to keep the redneck identity :D

But, that his picture up there joke was too good, made me laugh hard :D Good one sir @janton

thank you sir hananali, I wonder if he knows he is such good joke material? I hope he doesn't get offended, I heard he has a violent temper when he gets riled up!

I don't think he will get offended, I do not get offended, you do not get offended, what makes you think he will? but, he is that real redneck with heavy sideburns so he might be slightly different

haha! no, smithlabs is literally impossible to offend. I've harrassed him like crazy and it doesn't phase him one bit, he just comes back with a joke! lol...he's such a nice guy, too bad he never amounted to a hill of beans, he could have gone far. lol.

My grandmother would say" so smart n the one hand and so stupid on the other" lol. Yeah, Butch shoot himself and his gang in the foot by being hot headed, lol. He is not going to get out of this one. Now he is forever outlaw, well, until they catch him and his gang!!! Poor Elzy is already there!

That is so true Miss Lena, Butch should have kept trying and you'll see why on the next post. Also, Elzy's story is not over and I will tell about him at the end of the series, but he has something miraculous happen to him and he gets out of prison and goes straight! So that's really cool. But his wife was long gone but that time.
dang women, you can't keep them happy. so what if he was in prison? lol. no I don't blame her.

That's a good news Janton, but you shouldn't tell me so much a head of time, lol. And what woman would be happy with a man in jail? I am surprise she was with him in the first place. Well, I guess she was young and stupid and than she matured. Altough, he was probably good to her, even if he was an outlaw, but still. Anyway, I ma glad he is going to get out and straight. At least something to look forward to.

Yes, it will be one of the few bright spots in this story! lol. I agree, I think she tolerated his outlaw activity because she loved him and didn't want to get divorced, she wanted to stay married to him but that was the last straw when he went to prison.

Marriages get broken for far less serious things.

Because women are fickle? is that what you're saying Miss Lena? lol.

No!!! That's not what I am saying, lol. Altough, lots of women do have low self esteem especially in younger age. I know I did, lol.

I think women of all ages can be crazy! lol. Look at how many want to marry these famous murderers on death row, it's insane. But hopefully it is a very small percentage I'm sure. I think both men and women are equally crazy though. I wonder what the statistics for mental issues are and which gender has more problems in that area?

I know in the jail there are very few girls compared to the men but the percentage of the girls with mental issues is much higher. But then that might be because the men drive them crazy!

I agree though, self esteem is a big problem which is made much worse by the images that young girls see growing up and they can't compare, it's not right. Also, I think a good percentage of men are disgusting pigs! What percentage that is, I don't know, at least 50%?

That's funny about seeing Charles Woodcock again! They showed that in the movie I believe. It's hard to imagine so much money moving around on trains. Now it's all done over the internet - where the thieves can get it without guns if they're good enough! I like your idea about opening the safe but leaving the money as a message to the train company. The thing is, I guess the gang would have killed Butch and taken the money! One less guy to split it with...

howdy again sir Keith! ha! yeah running into Woodcock again was priceless, you can imagine what Woodcock was thinking. It was the safest way to move large amounts of money around back then and I think that continued for many decades. I agree, Butch would have been a great hacker if he was here now in this century!
Here's that scene from the movie..well I guess it was of the first robbery when they first met Woodcock.

Great lines:
Ain't what I call a fortune in there, Butch.
Well, just so long as we come out ahead, that's the main thing.

Awesome! :-)

hahaha! I agree, those are freaking great lines sir Keith! Glad you liked that! I gotta watch the whole movie again.

Hey janton, there must be a lot of rednecks in Texas, haha. The hairy one that visited you sounded very entertaining!

howdy today angiemitchell! Yes there are a great many rednecks in Texas. Most are simple people but are wonderful with hearts of gold but they just have a lot of quirky behaviors and cultural and character traits that make them stand out and are many times hilarious. That repairman was a classic redneck but super nice with a kind spirit and he was very very smart too, many rednecks are brilliant but you would never know by looking at them! lol.

Howdy esteem! Thanks for the upvote and for creating such a fluent platform!

I could't help it!... :D

haha! that's the kind of Colt 45 you like huh blacklux? lol! hey better watch it those things are high in calories!

That’s hilarious about Woodcock .how unlucky was he?? 😂😂😂. Your next post should be about him ! 😂😂😂. With all that money , what did they do with it??

Posted using Partiko iOS

haha! yes sir blanchy that Woodcock guy..lol..what are the odds? I wish I could find out more about him. He was a pretty important footnote in history but I can't even find a photo of him in the state archives or anywhere else. He definitely deserved a raise at least. In fact in the clip I put on today's post Butch (Paul Newman) tells him they aren't paying him enough! lol..it was classic!

No one is sure about the money but I think they finally started stashing it away instead of squandering it like they always did but now at this point they saw the writing on the wall and started saving.
