The Anti-Imperialist League

in #history8 years ago

Beginning in response to the U.S. annexation of the Philippines following the Spanish-American War, the American Anti-Imperialist League was a coalition of activists, businessmen, journalists, and politicians from all over the political spectrum engaged in an effort to thwart the expansionist aims of mainstream politics.

Largely portrayed as a political rather than moral position, this effort is almost entirely forgotten despite the efforts of well-known individuals including writer Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), industrialist Andrew Carnegie, Progressive activist John Dewey, Democrat President Grover Cleveland, Republican Senator George Edmunds, Labor leader Samuel Gompers, and the "Mother of Social Work" Jane Addams.

Tom Woods released a podcast containing an in-depth history lecture on the subject that deserves a listen. Check it out to learn more about this overlooked period of history and the interests that drew together such a diverse cast of characters.

We need one of these again.

I was showing somewhere in the neighborhood of $12 in rewards, and now just before payout you downvoted that away. How does this promote participation in the platform? You punish curators and creators alike in your misguided efforts, and this appears extra-punitive since it occurs now rather than closer to the time of creation. Who are you to decide that I am earning "too much" just as I begin to feel that I have attained success?
