Vitagraph Studios

in #history7 years ago

Opening in 1915 at the corner of Prospect and Talmadge, the Vitagraph Studios featured two daylight film stages and many outdoor film sets. The Warner brothers bought Vitagraph and their lot in 1925 and two years later it became the Warner East Hollywood Annex.

Portions of the first practical talkie, The Jazz Singer, were shot here. Warner also used a new film sound synchronization process developed by Vitagraph to make Al Jolson talk and sing in the film's title role.

In 1948 the old Vitagraph lot was acquired by the American Broadcasting Company and became ABC Television Center. Today the facility is still there and known as the Prospect Studio.

I love hearing about the early days of cinematography - it's like the start-ups in Toronto - constructing studios and establishing various support facilities to establish the new Hollywood North

Film history has an interesting tine line. Most movie goers have no idea what led up to the shadows they watch flitting across the screen. And yes, Canada, and particularly Toronto have certainly become a force to contend with.
