Contemplate with me, Llanddewi Aberarth, Wales

in #history6 years ago

Some views from yesterday's visit to the Cemetery in Aberarth to visit relatives' graves.

It was dry and for the first time not windy.

You can see a silent and vast expanse of sea from the cemetery and also the signs of an extremely dry summer.

The cemetery is tidy and well kept; it's also always been empty - nobody else around not even seagulls.

In the field next to the cemetery there were many horses and they looked a bit bored.

Inside the church there were some postcards and some information about the place to purchase. From there I found out that there has been a church on the site since at least the 9th century. They know this because at the entrance to the church there are thee stones... I photographed them but the quality is not that great. The inscriptions show they date from the 9th century and one of them is a hogback of Viking origin. Incidentally the actual church building was rebuilt in Victorian times.

and a detail here :

Whether religious or not, I find it comforting to go to a place like this... The peace and care taken of the place and the graves shows that regardless of time there is still a link to their past. It also reminds me to contemplate my own burial choices.

I also find churches very peaceful. Especially small simple ones like this one. What a wonderful link to the past. We no longer live near where my family is buried.

I also like the simplicity of the place @steven-patrick - it was so tidy and clean.

Very beautiful photographs- they seem to radiate with the peace of the place and the beautiful views. So many layers of history there. Really enjoyed your post- thank you. E x

Thank you so much for your kind words @eveningart.

Thank you for giving me a little taste of home! I was brought up in Ystrad Aeron - so the colours in your photos took me right back there :)

That's great, @eveningart, so do you come to this area often ? Just in case we're able to organise a Wales meet-up :D

Haha - that would be so cool! Only a couple of times a year to be honest- but I'd do everything I could to make it to a meet up :)

What a beautiful place @cryptocariad. I can see why you would find it comforting.

It was @gillianpearce... It was also a bit intriguing about those horses - so still and quiet and without much grass at all to nibble.

I wondered about the horses not having grass @cryptocariad and noticed lots of cows yesterday in dusty fields. Maybe they can survive on dry grass since that's what hay is really isn't it?

it won't do the fields much good though I wouldn't think. 😢

Indeed : ready-made hay ! one of our grassy areas (aka lawn) is already recovering after the bit of rain the other day... there's hope @gillianpearce :D

Ah. That is hopeful indeed @cryptocariad. We're still waiting for some rain here. 😊
