Vassdalen, a valley in northern Norway.

in #hiking5 years ago

A valley with rivers and streams.

The valley Vassdalen is located around 30 km outside Narvik. The name means something like a valley with much water. This makes sense, because there are a quite big river in the middle of the valley and several other rivers and streams, running down from the mountainside. Further down in the valley there is a lake called Hartvikvannet.

A couple of week ago we did a trip up the valley to a waterfall called Storfossen, (the big fall). This is a tour on 4 km and follow an old track or "road" up the valley. We did the tour on bikes up to the waterfall and walked from there around 2 km further up.

Halfway up the valley we met the first waterfall where we took a stop and looked at the flowing water and the surroundings.

Above the first waterfall the landscape flattens out and the river is more calm.

We passed this sideriver and waterfall.

The landscape looks like a park before the vegetation grow big.

The Vassdal accident occurred March 5, 1986. A troop of engineer soldiers was taken by snow avalanches. 16 soldiers perished. The accident is the worst the Norwegian Armed Forces have experienced during peacetime. Beneath the place where the avalanche took place, there is a memorial plate.

From Storfossen we continued on foot up to the treeline. The valley divides in two directions.

The trip was done 30.06. As you can see at that time it was still snow left in the mountains. The spring was cold, resulting in late melting. Still today it is quite a lot of snow from 800 meters and up.

Here we stopped before we returned the same way back to the car. Hope you enjoyed the trip and thanks for watching. Have a great evening.

Best regards
Harald
