Camping is fine in most places. You need to be vigilant. Thieving is rampant. We still camp in National Parks and Private Reserves but don't camp in most municipal camping grounds or Provence run Nature Reserves. Also when we camp in wilderness areas, like the Drakensberg Mountains, we try camp in big groups. As well as theft there have been violent attacks by locals.
