They Tell Me There's Gonna Be a Hardfork...

in #hf215 years ago

Within a few hours "everything's gonna change," or so they tell me...

For no particular reason, the old tune "Just A Song Before I Go" by Crosby, Stills & Nash plays in my head... yeah, I know, I'm really dating myself now...

Last time there was a so-called "hard fork," everything did indeed change. The entire ecosystem — for all intents and purposes — crashed, and I (along with thousands of others) ended up exploring Weku, the first "copy cat" and alternative site to Steemit.

It's almost a year later, and I hope I don't find myself back on Weku tomorrow... crying in my soup.

Some good solid stone posts to mark the occasion!

A Copy Ain't the Original!

Weku is actually a fine "object lesson" in how disgruntled people "making a copy" and defecting from an "original" version of something seldom turns into much more than an extremely watered down version of that original.

As I write these words, you can buy one "Weku" (the currency of the Weku site) for about 0.0035 Steem on Steem-Engine.

The old truth about there being a "first mover advantage" in a project still seems to hold true.

For a couple of years, people have expressed their concerns that Steem will head down the tubes when a better copy is invented. Trouble is... those "inventions" will always be copies. And because they are copies, it's extraordinarily hard to dislodge users of the original.

Anyway, the Good Word IS...

So hopefully everything won't crash tomorrow, August 27th, 2019. And hopefully things will get better, even though that's a promise we've heard before.

As much as anything, I am putting this post here as a sort of "marker" or bookmark on the occasion of the impending hardfork, and to at least have something in place, just in case everything grinds to some unexpected halt, for a couple of days.

What do I expect? DO I expect anything? Do I even hope for anything?

Well, personal experience has taught me that "hope" is a good thing, but "expectations" will bit you in the ass every time. So I expect nothing.

But I am vaguely hopeful that those of us who still hand create content and curate manually will be slightly better off. Not planning my budget around that, though!

I have read that those posts currently earning 20 Steem or more will end up being worth more, and the rest less, which doesn't bode well for someone like me. Although there was a time when I regularly would get 20 Steem or more on posts, that has been more than a year.

Let's hope the sun isn't setting on Steem!

I Actually Don't MIND Low Priced Steem...

Just one final word before I go:

I realized that I actually don't mind low priced Steem... because there's absolutely NO pretense or illusion that I am "making money" doing this... as a result of which, I am quite happy to play around with the new "tribes" and their tokens, and just powering up and letting it ride, because there's ZERO incentive to pull funds out of this system.

The equivalent of a few dollars a week makes NO effective difference in my cost of living, when you are living in the US of A... so this is basically "silly money" now. And that's really OK!

If Steem does end up taking a trip to the moon someday? Well, then my powered up Steem will be more or less like lottery winnings. Which (as an interesting "parallel") I also would never plan my food budget around!

Happy Forking to everyone — I hope we all come out alive on the other side!

See you on the other side friend!

My expectation about the upcoming hardfork is that there will be expectations :)

I "expect" that you're precisely right in your expectations!

And I expect there will be moaning, groaning and hand wringing over those expectations being not-met, or different, or whatever....

I was reminded of this quote written almost 2000 years ago:
“We trained hard—but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we were reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing, and what a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while actually producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.”

Happy forking!

That's a great quote — love it! And so very true of not only our current "circus," but also untold numbers of corporate structures and other organizations.

See you on the other side of the fork!

Thanks Peter; let's hope it all passes with a lot less chaos than the last one!

Looks like we had more unexpected drama after all. Never a dull day here 😁
