HF20 went (is going) really bad. Time to move our witness votes to the 21-45 witnesses?

in #hf206 years ago (edited)

Hard Fork 20 was a huge mother of a hard fork. Many major changes to the blockchain all at once, so problems were to be expected. Why did all this stuff have to go into just one HF? Why wasn't the HF roled back when it turned out that the HF had just kicked everyone but the whales and a few select orca's from the blockchain? Why did the official blog report a success of the HF while we were only at the start of the dolphin/minnow/redfish lock-out? Why, even now, that minnows are back, but we are still only at about 15% of normal when it comes to transactioning account count, isn't what turned out to be a potentially disastrous HF still not rolled back?

Well, the people to ask about this would be the top 20 witnesses. What went wrong? What did you guys learn from this ordeal? How do you guys intend to prevent it from going wrong at this scale the next time around?

I think we need an explanation from each of them and a statement like this one by @reggaemuffin.

As for us mere steemians, whatever our stake is, I think today is the moment to use our witness votes. Remove our votes from top 20 witnesses who have not shared a @reggaemuffin style statement with the community yet. For now, blindly vote for the 21-45 witnesses to give out a signal to the top twenty that we as a community take this shit serious. Also, if you have never voted for witnesses before and believe the top 20 witnesses are accountable for an amateur hardfork, now is the time to start voting for witnesses. Vote for the ones currently listed at 21-45. If enough of us show our discontent like this, the top 20 is bound to react and issue statements that should help the community get behind those witnesses that truly mean business when it comes to the future of this blockchain.

Please, everyone. Especially those with a fair amount of SP to their name and those who have never voted for witnesses before, consider the folowing:

  1. Check out any top-20 witness votes you might have made. Check out their recent blog posts. If they didn't create a @reggaemuffin style statement, disaprove them as a witness.
  2. With whatever you have left in witness votes, start voting for witnesses that aren't and weren't top 20 witnesses at the time of the hardfork (the 21..45 listed witnesses).
  3. Revisit your witness votes in two weeks. Check all top 50 witnesses for @reggaemuffin style statement and cast your vote for the ones you feel you can trust can make the next HF go better.

Thank you @pibara!

So far:

I know of other witnesses intending to do one and I will do a post listing as many of these as I can find an the next days.

Can we go back to HF 19? HF 20 seems pretty horrible.

If today there would be an Ethereum style fork with STEEM-20 on HF20 and STEEM-19 on HF19 simply discarding everything after 15:00 on the 25th, I'dd definitely power down and sell all my STEEM-20 to buy more STEEM-19.

Last hour I checked there were a little over 2,300 transacting users versus 12,000 .. 18,000 before the HF. The network seems to have lost 85% of its transacting users through HF20, and the trend up is so marginal that it will take years if we extrapolate.

I seriously think a rollback to HF19, even if it means having to Ethereum style split the blockchain should be on the table right now.

Do we want to lose:

  1. 3 days worth of transactions
  2. 85% of the userbase

Ceterum censeo HF20 esse delendam

I guess they are going to give out more resource credits but I think they are still going to cut down activity some.

The network seems to have lost 85% of its transacting users through HF20

Couldn't it just mean that 85% of the total activity before HF20 was sort of fake, like bots spamming with nice post comments ?

Judging from my own feed, I don't think it could be. I've been upvotes each and every post in my feed because there are so few to pick from.

Think I'll create a little data set containing some basic per user before and after traffic stats with basic account info for us to run analysis's on.

Need to check into that 85%, who they are and where they went and why.

Ceterum censeo HF20 esse delendam

thanks for pointing me to @reggaemuffin, will change my votes now!

btw what does the graphic at the end of your post show?

It shows, for the 96 hours (4days) before this post, how many accounts created transactions on the Blockchain that hour. The blue line is the first 48 hours, as reference, the red line the last 48 hours. It shows we are now at round and about 2,000 hourly active accounts Vs the 12,000 .. 18.000 of before the hard fork. So if this metric is any indication, still a long way from everything being irie.

Eh it'll be fine. Let's see what it's like in a few days. It'll probably be ok again by the weekend.
