Lammas New Moon Gathering

in #herbal8 years ago

Lammas, 'First Fruits': when the first results of growth and development can be seen and enjoyed. The London Linden trees started dropping their delightful fluttering seed bodies this week.

This is a time of harvest, when we look over and crops and evaluate the outlook for the rest of the year. It is at this time when we must make timely sacrifices and decide what must be discarded in order to allow other things to grow well. It is also a time to reflect on whether or not we need to invoke greater efforts to improve the coming harvest later in the year.

We spoke about how this time has metaphoric relevance to the everyday lives of us modern people; regarding career choices, relationships and personal development.

We spoke about the nature of the Plants and how they are perseveringly honest in their commitment to growth and yet how they do so in such a way that accommodates and encompasses others.

We reflected on the fact that even when a tree is cut down and only the stump remains, the neighbouring trees will still feed the stump nutrients via the mycelium network that binds all trees into one do-supportive organism.

We imagined that this may be in an attempt to preserve ongoing access to useful knowledge gathered and held by the Elder tree over its lifetime; it may be a great display of how inter-related the trees, and indeed all plants are; that even the unseen roots of the stump play an as-yet unknown role in the co-survival of the local eco-system.

We also marvelled at the fact that modern research shows that Plants communicate with each other via molecular chemical messengers; and how research also shows that younger plants do not thrive as well in the absence of the presence of elder plants.

We spoke about the beauty of the Sunflowers, who always turn their faces towards the shining face of the Sun.

We spoke about the beginnings of the Agrarian Age, when we Humans began to settle and cultivate the land rather than travel it; and the effects that this has had on Humankind's relationship to the Earth.

We ended by reflecting upon all that we had discussed, final comments were made and we brought the evening to a close.

We'll gather again to celebrate the new moon at the start of September

And in the meantime, a merry Lammas Moon to all!
