Başlangıçta kripto para birimleri ile dalga geçmek/alaya almak için çıkmış bir koindir. 6 Aralık 2013'te piyasaya sürülen dogecoin, işlem hacmi arttıkça şaka ürünü olmaktan çıkmıştır. Dogecoin bir zamanlar İnternette fenomen olan doge capsini kendi sembolü olarak kullanmaktadır.

Dogecoin dünya çapındaki borsaları bir çoğunda işlem görmektedir. Her ne kadar tanesinin fiyatı düşük olsa da dolaşımdaki miktarı ile küçümsenmeyecek bir hacme sahiptir. Dogecoin'i bir diğer kripto para birimi olan Litecoin'e benzetebiliriz. Her ikisi de Scrypt kullanıyor ve proof of work mantığı ile çalışıyor. Özellikle insanlar Dogecoin'i işlem hızları için tercih ediyor diyebiliriz. Büyük hacimli diğer kripto paralarda yığılmalar olduğu zaman Dogecoin gibi koinler imdada yetişiyor.
