Brief Review: John Grisham’s The Tumor (A Non-Legal Thriller), Free Kindle Book

in #health6 years ago (edited)

The Tumor starts off with the fictionalized story of a man with a healthy lifestyle who suddenly comes down with a brain tumor. His treatments are done with existing mainstream procedures, but …

9 months after the first surgery, he passes away at the age of 36. The total cost of his treatment and care is approximately $300,000. (location 203/433)

The next section of the book starts off with the same fictionalized patient, but his treatments are done with a new technology called focused ultrasound.

… seven years after his initial diagnosis, the tumor is growing again, and the procedure is done for the third time. **Cost to date: approximately $75,000, Savings: about $225,000 and one life prolonged.

Grisham is cautious in his presentation. This treatment may be very successful indeed, but the stories he tells don’t come off as excessive hype. So far, the best one can hope for is extended lifespan and a better quality of life for a much reduced medical bill. More research is the key.

One Amazon reviewer remarked that this book is basically an extended infomercial for focused ultrasound, but this strikes me as excessively harsh. John Grisham is no Michael Crichton, so I didn’t expect The Tumor to read like a science thriller.

Making the general public aware that focused ultrasound technology treatments for Parkinson’s, bone tumors, uterine fibroids, and tremors has already been done and clinical trials are under way in many countries. I’m sure this news will bring hope to many patients suffering from chronic illnesses. Increased public attention will bring in more research funds, and that’s good enough for me.

The paperback is US$18.36, but the Kindle version is FREE (don't how for how long):
