Why you should avoid eating Street Food!

I'm sitting in a hospital room as I write this post. My brother has been diagnosed with Typhoid and has been admitted in the hospital for four days.

We took quite some time to find out the cause of his contacting this disease blaming so many factors. Ultimately, we found the reason for its occurrence.

Approximately two weeks ago, we had attended a concert. We were pretty hungry once it was finished and decided to have bread pakora (local Indian snack) in a nearby stall. There were a lot of flies nearby and the pakoras were kept in the open.

At that moment we didn't bother about any of that as we were quite hungry. We had the oily pakoras and tea.

A few days later, my brother started having headaches but we thought it could be one of those occasional headaches and ignored it.

The next day the headache persisted but a little milder. A few days passed this way and he started feeling a little weak and body was heating up. We thought it would be fever and got him Crocin tablets.

The weakness still persisted after some more days and he started having loose motion. This was the point we started suspecting it could be some disease and visited the doctor.

We got all the check ups done and the result came positive for Typhoid.

Upon googling, we found that the infection is passed on through contaminated food and drinking water.

This was when we started finding if he had consumed something unhygienic. The only time he had something unhygienic were these bread pakoras which were probably infected because of flies sitting on them.

The flies carry Salmonella bacteria on their legs when they sit on stools of people infected with the disease. When they sit on foods, the bacteria is transmitted to the food. When a healthy person consumes it, he catches the disease.

Hence, avoid street food as much as possible because they are exposed to all kinds of dust, pollution and bacteria.

Also, the person who prepares these are often careless about hygiene. They use non filtered water which may already carry many kinds of germs and bacterias. They don't wash their hands before touching the food, and sometimes even add their sweat for added flavour lol :p

Typhoid can be cured with antibiotics. We visited the doctor at the right time. If we had delayed it any further, it could've been fatal. Four days in the hospital and he will be totally fine.

If any of you eat a lot of Street food, be cautious and take action as soon as you spot any symptom.

Writing this post on my phone. Please excuse formatting errors, if any! 😁

Cheers!

As much as I love eating food outside, I know the harmful effects of doing it frequently without caution. I wish your brother a speedy recovery and good health. Take care bro!

Thank you bro! Conveyed your wishes to him, he says thanks :)

Great advice and article!

A friend of mine who just returned home after being in India got very sick. Turns out she also had typhoid! So, this is good to be aware of as I have been fairly careless in the past during my travels.

Luckily, I have not caught ANYTHING other than once getting food poisoning and having to last hours on a bus with everything wanting to come out every which end.... ahahaha... oh god... I won't go into detail on that story. HOWEVER, I did learn a valuable lesson even then and it was to be more conscious of what I am eating while in India.

Luckily, typhoid is something I never caught. I am very grateful.... but this is definitely a MUST know for any traveler going to India.

I was told before I got to India that every body gets sick at least once... I had my experience. I am glad it wasn't worse than it was. Now I am currently on a 30 day fruit fast really cleansing out my system while I am here in Nepal. I have felt it necessary after being in India for 3 months.

Hahaha! These things add to the experience of being in India :P

Lucky you escaped with only food poisoning.

Fasting sounds like a really good idea to cleanse your system. I fast on alternate days in the nights. Feels very refreshing and full of energy to tackle anything that comes my way the next day.

Stay safe! As they say, prevention is better than cure :)

Street food is like smoke. More you eat increase the chances to catch you by diseases.

I live alone but I never Eat food from outside. Only once a month I eat street food.

Today's generation don't understand it until they experience.

Nice dude! People tend to ignore the facts because they don't see the immediate effects. They will know it when they are old :P

wishing @yesaye a speedy recovery.. there is always a risk in eating roadside food.. but be careful and selective of what u have..

By the way, great photo :P

Hey buddy! I'll convey your message to him when he wakes up. Thanks for the wishes! :)

Majority of people in india loves street food but we still are not aware of the diseases which we get from these. A person like me never bother about the reason behind any of the disease and if we got diagnosed with any of them then we straight go to the doctor and get treatment. I want to thankyou for sharing your experience with us and it simply a eye opener for me. Cheers.

Glad it helped :)

speedy recovery to your brother :) take care.. cheers :)

@wandereronwheels I wish the speedy recovery for Sharan. You are absolutely right, street food and contaminated water is a real threat to the health of millions especially in this scotching summer. Take care brothers.

Thank you Uncle! :)

I wish he should get well soon. Even I am also not going to eat street food, it's too unhygienic.

Thank you Nimi!
