California to list glyphosate as cancer-causing; Monsanto vows fight

in #health7 years ago

Glyphosate, an herbicide and the active ingredient in Monsanto Co's popular Roundup weed killer, will be added to California's list of chemicals known to cause cancer effective July 7, the state's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) said on Monday.

The listing is the latest legal setback for the seeds and chemicals company, which has faced increasing litigation over glyphosate since the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer said that it is "probably carcinogenic" in a controversial ruling in 2015.

One thing I can agree on with Liberals in California is that dangerous chemicals should not be sprayed on our food. Oh of course Monsanto is going to fight this but if other states catch on and do same then Monsanto will be screwed. Without the ability to spray round up on all the crops in California the end result will save countless live from cancer and probably billions in healthcare savings.

Monsanto and other glyphosate producers would have roughly a year from the listing date to re-label products or remove them from store shelves if further legal challenges are lost.

Win-Win for the people of California. Hopefully this will open up the door for some lawsuits against Monsanto in the states too.

I think it would be unwise for them fight California. It will be costly, and the voters in California could just make them go away. I do see why they have the urge to fight, but I think they have simply done themselves too much harm by engaging in bad practices for short term gain. Once California stops the use of glyphosate, they may seek to limit the import of products grown with glyphosate. Then, when other states see that they can no longer sell to 39 million people, they will change their laws concerning the use of glyphosate, and that could lead to other countries banning glyphosate. Then,
finally, the tribulation for Monsanto,

Yup, should give organic farming a boost too.

California is known to cause Cancer of Mind, Body and Soul.

That is very true maybe they should put up warning signs before you enter the state.

Excellent post. I did most of college essays about gmo's and Monsanto. Its seriously madness this Round Up crap is still on the market. Thank you for sharing. I need to post more about this. One of the biggest enemies of humanity Monsanto and been bought out by another gem BAYER Pharmaceuticals. I just saw you liked one of my posts and came to checkout your posts and saw this. A video I made awhile back. Upvoted!

Thanks for reading, good video too.

its mind blowing how they can continue to skirt justice and aren't out of business yet.

A company should be allowed to do whatever they want to their products, but if they advertise those products as safe, or healthy, or even "researched" then they should face consequence for making such claims when those claims fall short of what the products deliver.

People are waking up, there's still hope justice will find them.

Glyphosate is one of the main causes of health problems nowadays. Even though it kills weeds and pests, humans get caught up in the process too. Great article @wakeupnd steem on Bro!

Telling people how they can and can't run their business won't stop them from using another product that's not yet been classified as carcinogenic, if that is what they want to begin with. I think people simply need to be responsible for their choices, and how they chose to spend their money is their fault more or less. What is wrong is allowing companies like monsanto and other big ag conglomerates have free rides in the economic sense of subsidies and exemptions, this will only lead to more incentive to cut corners and not actually compete based on products or services offered, but only to appease the ones that are responsible for how much subsidies get allocated, in turn they have abandoned their business in that sense.

Spreading information like this is important, this is how people decide on what products to spend their money on, and when enough people stop paying for the cheap and familiar, then we won't need to play catch up with the next poison to replace this poison.

I only ask that laws be applied equal. If I can't build a shit house on my property because it might contaminate 'wetlands' on my property than Monsanto shouldn't be allowed to sell glyphosate that get's sprayed everywhere that seeps into ground water and contaminates it for decades.

That makes sense, what I was saying is that outside those things, outside directly affecting someone else/against their choice, then yeah, but laws won't be applied equal when they pay for the judges, the people that actually write laws, and donate to just about everyone that enforces them, on and off the books, the other alternative is to inform people.

Agreed, I think education and maybe some civil disobedience is the best way counter our corrupt government.
