ISeries: Your Sight May Be At Risk If You Are Noticing These Signs(Wafrica Guest Post)

Aging comes with lots of changes within our bodies and the eye is not an exception to this rule. A common phenomenon that happens is the decrease in how well we are able to appreciate things by means of sight, in other words, our vision deteriorates. That is, our visual acuity (how well one sees straight ahead) reduction may be as a result of age related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract development or liquefaction of the jelly like substance in our eye called Vitreous, during the process of liquefaction, the vitreous happens to pull on the retina, the part of the eye with the cells responsible for converting the light energy from objects been seen to electrical impulses for the brain to be able to interpret vision.

One common occurrence that comes along with the liquefaction process is something called entoptic phenomenon, simply put, floaters and flashes. What happens is that individuals whose eyes may be undergoing this process would report of seeing sudden flashes in their vision or object floating in the their vision, most often than not this occurs suddenly and it is transient. Now two things are involve in this scenarios, it is either, the diagnosis is harmless vitreous detachment or a more serious condition retinal detachment** which also presents with these similar symptoms.

Retinal detachment is a condition in which the retina is separated from the layer underneath. Symptoms aside the floaters and flashes of light also presents with worsening of vision in the outer part of the visual field. One may describe it as a curtain over part of the vision. The retina is not able to work properly when this happens and this could result in permanent vision loss (irreversible) if not treated right away. Individuals who are severely nearsighted, had had an eye injury or surgery or has history of retinal detachment in his or her family are more prone to it.

Early diagnosis is essential to the prevention of complete vision loss as a result of retinal detachment, do not assume it is innocuous until otherwise diagnosed by your Optometrist. Be particular about your health, do not leave anything to chance. Good Life, Live it well. Have a good day.
