What a cankerworm!

There is a growing public concern in our country, Nigeria and the world as a whole about the involvement of youths and adolescents in drug abuse.

This is defined as non-medical use of substance by human beings that may modify one or more of its functions and may impair an individual ability to function effectively and may result in social, physical or emotional harm.

The personal, social and public health problems associated with drug use have aroused worldwide interest and concern.

While it is universerly accepted that drugs can be of great benefits to man and society, it is also acknowledged that inappropraite use of drugs can be harmful to man.

What a twist?

Drug abuse is a worldwide hazard with dangerous complications that affect many countries around the globe, Nigeria inclusive. The problem varies from place to place.

The term drug abuse is used to describe licit or illicit substance that has an effect on the structure and functioning of the brain when it is taken wrongly.

It includes alcohol, tobacco, medicine, Indian hemp, cocaine and other illegal substances. Drugs can be legal or illegal; they can be helpful or harmful, depending on the type and the usage or mode of administration.

Most young people use drugs to feel like adults, to fit in and belong to a group of other youths, to satisfy their curiosity, and to simply derive pleasure from the short-term effects of drugs.

The impact of drug abuse among Nigerian youths has been considered a moral degradation.

Many youths ignorantly or knowingly depend on one drug or the other for their daily activities. Youths have taken to drug abuse. Much efforts have been made to eradicate the abuse of drugs.

Drug abuse and addiction have destructive or devastating consequences but our youths are still into drugs. ‘Not only that it destroys the affected individual but it has a pervasive effect on all those who know or work with the individual.

Drug addiction is a tragedy on the society. It has contributed in the set backs of the society.

Inspite of this, many youths still indulge in it. Some youths are school drop-outs because they could not continue due to the rate of drug they have taken that may have resulted to insanity and loss of memory.

Many youths are homeless, wanderers, derelicts, unemployed, rapist, thugs, armed robbers and so on because they are drug addicts.

A lot of lives and property have been wasted in accident and violence because of drug.

Youths that are supposed to be the hope of their families and the society at large and useful to themselves have wasted their lives, all because of drugs.

I only then wanted to ask this, what is the next step to take about drug abuse.

Allow it for the good or eradicate it.

Kindly give me a reason for your answer.

Thank you.

Anything can be used responsibly for benefit or abused for destruction.

Old attempts to label “goods” and “bad” and restrict individual’s right to choose what they put into their body is a failed strategy. Education would be a far better option - providing unbiased insight and support to enable people to make optimal decisions for themselves based on proper knowledge of what may distinguish beneficial use from outright abuse...

I got a deeper understanding from this.
You have a way of educating.

I will share thoughts better putting into consideration my understanding from this perspective which best suit my interest.

Thank you
