I'd have to say "YES" on this one.

Hereditary influence is one of the many causes of having a mental illness. As far  as I know, having a mental illness doesn't only result from a single causative factor, but a group of different factors.

There are a lot of things which can trigger mental illnesses. It could be that a person, due to hereditary influence, have a bigger chance of having a mental illness. However, by this alone, one cannot really have a severe one.

When being prone to having mental illness due to heredity is partnered with other factors such as environmental factors, stress, trauma, adverse effect of medicine, etc., then the mental illness may occur.

In the end, most illnesses including mental ones, are caused by a lot of different factors... or from one factor which is aggravated by other several factors.
