Here’s How You Can Prevent A Hangover

in #health6 years ago

Are you tired of getting a hangover after a night of drinking? Here are the 5 ways on how you can avoid it:

1. Watch the clock and pace yourself

The size and height of a person can play a role in how much alcohol you can handle per hour. Those who are bigger and taller can handle their liquor better compared to smaller and shorter people.

"We can get rid of most of the alcohol we drink if we [limit] drinking to one drink per hour," said Boris Tabakoff, a researcher at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

2. Limit congeners

Congeners, known as chemical impurities, are usually found in some alcoholic beverages as a result of the fermenting process. Dark-colored liquors such as tequila, whiskey, brandy, and bourbon often have the highest amount. Meanwhile, lighter-colored drinks may slightly help, but the best prevention strategy was to enjoy alcohol in moderation.

3. Eat before and while drinking

Fatty or high-fiber foods, and anything with vitamin C are good options to help process alcohol more effectively. "Food helps to slow down the rate at which your body absorbs alcohol," said Dr. Arielle Levitan, an internal medicine physician from Chicago.

4. Skip champagne and diet soda

Studies revealed that drinking champagne can accelerate the absorption of alcohol in your body due to the presence of carbon dioxide. According to researchers, this may prompt "more rapid or severe intoxication. Diet soda can also increase intoxication, even more than regular soda.

5. Don't pick up cigarettes

A 2012 report pointed out that lighting up on the same day one drinks heavily can increase the risk of a brutal hangover.
"It’s not just that the smoking will increase their discomfort the next day, but it may be increasing brain problems in the long run. The fact that smoking aggravates hangover may be a warning sign that people should heed," said Damaris Rohsenow, author of the study.
