The Awesome Health Benefits of Turmeric

in #health7 years ago (edited)

Original from Southeast Asia, the turmeric is an incredible spice, used not only to flavor and color foods, but also as a natural treatment for a variety of illnesses and as preventive treatment. It is highly used in curry, the famous Indian dish, and it gives food a bright yellow color, also being used as a natural colorant in the food and cosmetic industry. It is a condiment with a rather spicy and bitter taste, but also highly aromatic, being widely used in a variety of dishes not just in Asia, but around the world. But, letting food and cooking aside, what are the health benefits of turmeric? You will be surprised to discover that this condiment can help in a broad variety of cases in which your state of health is involved.

Health benefits

Turmeric has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, being great in cases of arthritis and other illnesses that cause inflammations in the organism. It is a potent antioxidant as well, repelling the negative effects of free radicals, which can produce significant damages to our cells. When consumed, turmeric has the power to destroy free radicals alone, also stimulating the body to produce antioxidant enzymes at the same time, getting the body ready for a longer period. It improves brain function and lowers the risk of developing illnesses that affect the brain. It prevents and even reverses many steps that lead to heart diseases, by improving the function of the endothelium, which is the lining of your blood vessels. It can prevent and even help in the treatment of cancer. It can prevent and aid in the treatment of Alzheimer. It prevents and treats depression and fights against chronic illnesses triggered by old age.

Turmeric and Black pepper

Many people take turmeric together with pepper, because these two seem to have an amazing effect together. This incredible combo can alleviate pain, helps with weight loss and diabetes management, diminishes inflammation, and keeps cancer away.

Combining it with other vitamins and supplements

Because turmeric is an entirely natural product, there are no recorded side-effects when combining it with other vitamins and supplements. While it is safe to do so, exceptions may appear and the daily dose of turmeric you take per day can make the difference between positive and negative effects. Turmeric is extremely healthy, but a recommended dose should not be exceeded. Also, it is worth knowing that turmeric is a great source of vitamin C and vitamin B, so it may not be necessary to take additional vitamins of this kind. Still, it is best to consult with your doctor to see the right recommendations and dosages in your case.

Why it works

Through its anti-oxidant, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties, turmeric will not allow viruses, bacteria, germs, even parasites, to dwell in your body. It has the power to destroy almost everything that invades your organism with the purpose of doing damage and allowing an illness to get installed. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and it is an efficient natural painkiller, keeping pain and discomfort at bay.

How to take it

The easiest way to take turmeric is to include it in your daily diet. Sprinkle this condiment over foods like salads or soups, and include it in the dishes you prepare. Don’t forget to add black pepper to the recipe because it helps increase the absorption of turmeric. You can also make a paste with turmeric that can also be added to your food or enjoy turmeric tea. But, regardless if you use fresh turmeric roots, powdered root, standardized powder, fluid extract, or tincture, read the label of the product for the recommended daily doses.

Where to buy it

If you want to make sure you enjoy all the benefits of turmeric, you will have to be careful what you are buying. If you are looking for organic turmeric powder, shops that sell organic products or traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine shops should provide it. There are also the places online where you can find turmeric supplements, tinctures, and other related products. The fresh turmeric roots can be found in supermarkets, although not all of them may come from organic cultures.

How to grow turmeric at home

Turmeric is not difficult to be cultivated, so you can easily try it. You will need a few turmeric rhizomes to start with and high-quality organic soil, because it will not be productive in regular soil. It will also need warm temperatures, so if the weather outside is cold where you live, you will have to grow it indoors, in a pot or containers, just make sure the containers are large enough to allow the roots to spread. But if the weather outside is nice and warm, you can plant it in an outside container or even in the garden, watering it regularly. Once the plant starts growing, you can harvest its rhizomes whenever you want. But the longer you will let the plant to grow, the more rhizomes you will get.

On a personal note... I am 100% fan of Turmeric - its an amazing plant given to us by the Creator. It has so many uses with a great effect on our body. I hope that with this short summary of what Turmeric is, and can do, you will be inspired to use, grow and take it for your benefit!

I believe the most beneficial compounds in Tumeric are the curcuminoids. Curcumin supplements are very common but there are different types. The most common being:

C3 Complex - Curcumin with black pepper. This is cheap and effective but can cause medication interactions due to the black pepper.

Longvida - Increases curcumin absorbtion by over 200x. Used in studies for Alzheimers.

Mervia - Another highly absorbed curcumin supplement. Mostly researched in anti-inflammatory studies.

I personally use Longvida. Happy supplementing Steemians.

Great comment and addition to the article, thanks!

I like to put fresh turmeric in winter soups. I have a little baggie in the freezer full of peeled ginger and tumeric, and then it's easy to grate some up at any time.
