According to Wikipedia, nutrition is the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food, in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism. Nutrition involves the intake of food, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism and excretion.
From antiquity, man has been known to be nutritional conscious. The first recorded nutritional experiment with human subject is found in the Bible Book of Daniel Chapter 1:1-16. Daniel and his friends who were captives in Babylon were selected as court servants. Hence, they were to eat from the king’s fine food and good wine, but they rejected the King’s good food and preferred vegetables (pulse) and water (this to me makes them the first vegetarian in history). After ten days of feeding on vegetables and water, they were compared to the other king’s men and they appeared healthier than the other men.
Unhealthy diet can cause deficiency related diseases such as; partial blindness, anaemia, preterm birth, still birth etc. Also, the consumption of food in excess quantity (over-consumption) can also lead to life threatening conditions such as diabetes, strokes and cardiovascular diseases. Hence, why balance diet is said to be the consumption of the essential classes of food in their right quantities and proportion.
NUTRIENTS NEEDED IN THE BODY
