Breakfast is no doubt the most important meal of the day. It provides energy and nutrition for all the activities of the day. According to latest study, we must consume almost 15 – 25% of our daily intake at breakfast. But results from latest survey are very disappointing. According to the survey, 18 – 25% of adults and 36% of teenagers from North America skip their breakfast.

After an overnight fast, our body needs energy to cope with day to day activities and the breakfast provides fuel to our body and brain. Hence its name originates; breaking the fast. Without having breakfast, we are trying to run our body like without fuel.

What we take first thing in the morning provides energy to the body as well as it alerts our mind. That is why most of the people drink coffee in the morning. They believe that coffee improves their alertness. According to research conducted by Harvard School of Public Health, consuming couple of coffee cups in a day, reduced the suicide rate to half in North Americans.

Breakfast foods are good source of vital nutrients like iron, calcium, Vitamins, fibres and protein. If these nutrients are skipped in the morning, they can’t be compensated in rest of the day. Fruit and vegetables are good source of minerals and vitamins. So these must be included in our breakfast.

According to research, the people who eat breakfast are less likely to gain weight and they remain in their ideal weight range as compared to people who skip breakfast. Breakfast skippers normally go for high sugar and fatty snacks mid of morning.

Breakfast also restores levels of the glucose which are vital for function of the brain. It improves the memory and concentration levels and reduces the stress level. It improves the sense of achievement in children and hence improves grades in children.

Breakfast fulfils the energy needs in different stages of life. The children need most of the energy and they must consume 1970 kcal per day in age group of 7 – 10 years. The adult men require 2500 kcal and adult women require 2000 kcal per day. Men need more energy than women.

Breakfast has long term health benefits. It reduces high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and heart diseases. It starts our metabolism and helps us to burn the calories.
