Increase Longevity

We've all heard that exercising is good for us. The good news is that we don't have to do a grueling workout in order to become healthier. Even walking 30 minutes a day can keep us healthier.

Now research is showing that it is even easier. Short periods of light physical activity during the day are enough to increase lifespan in older men. Yeah, and I fall into the "older men" category.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine published their study showing that a number of periods of only 10 minutes or less can also have the effect of prolonging life in older men. The researchers found that the overall volume of exercise, not necessarily how long or how hard someone exercised in a session, mattered most for longevity. And that, IMO, makes it easy to do 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Here are some really good results:

  • Every 30 minutes of light intensity activity per day — like going on a walk or gardening — was linked to a 17% lower risk of early death;
  • Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity had an even stronger link to a longer life: doing it was associated with a 33% reduction in death risk for every 30 minutes of exercise.

No more excuses. Go out for a walk. Do some gardening. Do some light exercises with an instructor on TV. Dance. Walk around the shopping mall. Doing this will keep you healthier; happier; and living longer.
