Live Long = Sit Less
It has been long suspected that sitting a lot, at work or at home, is not healthy. Previous studies have found that prolonged sitting can raise the chances of heart disease, various cancers and an earlier death. (DREAMSTIME)
(This is an opinion on the article Want to live longer? Move more, sit less by Lauren Pelley for thestar.com on July 28, 2016.)
On Thursday, results of a study broke the Internet as it pertains to health of people nowadays. Most of us who were seated in front of a desk somewhere almost immediately stood up and walked a few steps just to prolong our lives (a literal occurrence if you would like to know).
These were the dreaded words read across the globe:
Adults need around 60 to 75 minutes of daily moderate-intensity physical activity — such as a brisk walking or cycling — to fully eliminate the increased risk of death associated with sitting for 8 hours a day, according to research published this month in the medical journal The Lancet.
The paper is based on standardized data from the 2009 Canada Fitness Survey and 15 other international studies involving more than one million people around the world, with a followup period ranging from two to 18 years.
Not surprisingly, researchers found a clear association between a higher risk of dying and increased sitting time coupled with lower levels of activity. (Earlier research has linked too much sitting with an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and it’s also a potential risk factor for many chronic conditions.)
This alarming new research (we haven’t heard much of this in the media for sometime now) has compelled more and more desktop warriors and couch potatoes out there to aggressively engage in more physical activities like walking a few feet way towards the kitchen, bedroom or to the water-cooler or coffee machine.
And if you see several people walking around your neighborhood after dark it might not be because of Pokemon Go, but a new found dedication to get their World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week.
Let’s get a move on people to live longer!
Now on my way to the water-cooler.- See more at: http://awinaway.com/2016/07/29/live-long-sit-less/#sthash.nBXXvKij.dpuf

I keep hearing the expression "sitting is the new smoking". I laugh every time I hear it but I can't help but think that it is true, even if only to a small degree.
Yes, I've heard that too.
Time to be more active.
nice post bro, time to go for a ride
Thanks. We've got to "move it, move it" as they say.
I'm probably already dead then...
Not too late to start now. Been trying to exercise as often as I could these days. I feel much better because of it.
