Orthodontics, ¿health or business? Common problem among patients
Orthodontics
Because it gives me a lot of sadness, impotence and anger to receive people scammed by supposed "orthodontists" every day. Did you know that orthodontics requires a study of 3 additional years to the dentist's career? with an almost full-time schedule from Monday to Friday.
Orthodontics is a postgraduate course that lasts two years (the first theoretical year, the second theoretical-practical year) and a third year for the presentation of your clinical case (thesis).
Currently the beauty and show a spectacular smile is among the priorities of most human beings and that has led to the same professional guild create courses, diploma or intensive of the branches of dentistry that are most sounding in this epoch, such as aesthetics (veneers, smile designs), orthodontics, surgery, etc.
Many colleagues do these courses, some for a couple of days, others traveling for up to two years and at the end they want to work as professionals in that area.
Can you imagine a doctor doing a week-long course and already consider himself a cardiologist? I think it would seem crazy to anyone, now many will read me and say what do you want to get?
Doing a course can give you notions, open the doors, be a kind of open mouth for any specialization, but that does not make you a specialist, now I dare to say that most of the orthodontists you get in any private practice he does not have the adequate preparation, but the worst is not that, but there are patients who put their mouths at the disposal of these so-called "specialists".
Because day after day, unsatisfied patients come to our office, they have extracted pieces that were not necessary to extract, that have made such abrupt movements that have a very high degree of tooth mobility, that they have been five years or more with a "pega bracket" (we call it that at least in Venezuela, to all those who place orthodontics without the necessary preparation), this the truth is very sad, because it is becoming a business.
My recommendations as a dentist who has attended an orthodontist for almost four years:
- When you go to your orthodontic office for the first time, try to see if it has its title on the wall that says it is an orthodontist and where you did the specialization, if you do not see it, during your query, ask where you did your specialization and how long it lasted This in order to know if it was a course or if it was the specialization as I told you before, you usually see classes from Monday to Friday for two years.
- No orthodontist can give a clear diagnosis or treatment plan without seeing the relevant radiographs and with at least no more than a month old, the Panoramic and Lateral Cephalic are requested (rarely start a treatment without first seeing said X-rays) .
- During your first consultation your orthodontist is in charge of telling you if possibly during your treatment you are going to require extracting one or more dental pieces and how your profile will affect said extractions.
- Verify that when you take out your instruments, you will place new cases, that the package is sealed and that they are not used brackets.
- No orthodontist in his right mind replaces a loose bracket, that is, if you drop a bracket and take it to the consultation to save that money and put that same bracket RUN! that does not It is not ethical at all. The brackets have porosities on the back, which allows the resin to adhere to the tooth, once it is removed those porosities are covered with resin, the bracket becomes infected and no longer serves to be repositioned, it will never have the same adhesion and it will not exert the same force on the tooth.
- A good orthodontist will tell you that you can not remove the orthodontics without first removing the wisdom teeth, this is for the simple reason that if the orthodontics is removed and your teeth are aligned, when leaving the wisdom teeth move their teeth and loses the job.
- An orthodontic treatment can last between 1 year and a half and three years (if you are a good patient and you go to all your appointments)
- When you finish your orthodontic treatment you must use fixed, removable appliances or both, it all depends on your orthodontist, that is, you will need a removable retainer (can be superior and inferior) or a removable retainer superior and fixed lower (usually not recommended place fixed on top)
Removable Upper and Lower Retainer
If you want me to talk about a particular topic let me know, do not forget to tell me your experiences and if this post helped you.
There are two positions; General Dentist and a Specialist. A specialist requires an additional 3 yr of study in a specific field.
There are certian courses, modules or diplomas which can give you an idea about some special procedures and may even be able to do some. But you can't be a specialist by merely doing a diploma or module.
A general Dentist can Perform many Dental Procedures but Orthodontia along with some special surgeries aren't ethically and legally done by General Dentist.
P.S. Glad to see another Dentist here on Steemit.
That's right, that's why it's important for patients to choose their dentist very carefully. I love that there is another colleague in the network
