CHECK YOUR GENOTYPE BEFORE YOU SAY I DO

Something serious came to my desk today about genotype and relationship. Many times, we tend to ignore the little things which eventually are deciding factors. Love is not the only deciding factor in selecting a future partner neither is loyalty, trust nor understanding. Is your genotype compatible with your lover's?

There are 3 major types of genotypes; AA, AS and SS according to science studies. Recently, report has it there is a new type of genotype; AC but I won't write further about the new type.

AA Genotype

AA + AA are quite compatible and will only produce children with blood genotype AA. AA is actually compatible with other genotypes. AA + AS will probably produce children with AA and AS, AA + SS will produce children with genotype AS.

AS Genotype

The most compatible genotype with AS is only AA. This will produce children with AA & AS genotype which is far better. It is risky for AS and AS and also, AS and SS. This has high probability of producing SS children. SS is sickle cell.

SS Genotype

SS genotype means children with sickle cell. They fall sick often and have underdeveloped organs. The only compatible genotype with SS is AA. This will practically reduce SS genotype among children but most people are scared of this relationship.

This article is not only related to science but to throw caution to couples of nowadays. Before choosing who you plan to spend the rest of your life with,visit a clinic or hospital to know your compatibility. Dont go further before realizing it is too late to quit. It is actually better to be late to know and break up than to go ahead and give birth to children at risk of health problems.

Also, let us stop stigmatization of people living with sickle cell, they are part of us and deserve to be loved. The truth is, they can live longer than most people with other genotypes. No one actually knows tomorrow.
