Medical Regulation: An Interesting fact

in #health7 years ago

Practicing medicine is a profession. As a profession, medical profession consists of highly educated and skilled individuals who are generally adhered to ethical standards accepted by all. It maintains a very high level of self esteem and vows themselves to apply their knowledge and practice their skills for the welfare of mankind. But the attempt to regulate this highly self regulated profession is very ancient.

The first recorded instance was identified as early as 1750 B.C. It is called the code of Hammurabi of Old Babylon. The regulations are rather very interesting. Let us look at them:

code of Hammurabi.jpg

  1. If a surgeon has operated with the bronze lancet on a patrician for a serious injury, and has caused his death, or has removed a cataract for a patrician, with the bronze lancet, and has made him lose his eye, his hands shall be cut off.

What a start man. THE SURGEON'S HANDS SHALL BE CUT OFF. HA HAA

  1. If the surgeon has treated a serious injury of a plebeian's slave, with the Bronze lancet, and has caused his death, he shall render slave for slave

Not so difficult to treat a slave then! Just had to spare his own slave.

  1. If he has removed a cataract with the bronze lancet, and made the slave lose his eye, he shall pay half his value.

An even better option. Being an eye surgeon was the best option.

  1. If a surgeon has cured the limb of a patrician, or has doctored a diseased bowel, the patient shall pay five shekels of silver to the surgeon.

Five silver coins, if you succeed but both of your hands were at stake in case of failure. What a motivation man

Its great writing!upvoted

Interesting look into the history of medicine. A surgeon in the early days if medicine must have truly loved his job if he was willing to put his own hands at stake.

The journey of medicine through the history is an exciting one. I have a great interest in the history of medicine. We can travel through the history by different anecdotes. Stay with me. Thank you
