New Study: Common Food Additive Could Be Destroying Our Digestive System

in #health7 years ago

Researchers at Bingham University have found a common food additive, titanium oxide nanoparticles, that might be contributing to the destruction of small intestinal cells in many individuals.

This information is concerning because our intestines are the instrument that is able to absorb our nutrients and act as a barrier for us in order to help protect us from harmful pathogens. That critical system, researchers say, can be drastically altered with chronic exposure to titanium oxide nanoparticles.

The controversial food additive is found in many products, everything from bread, doughnuts, and other sweets, to soda, mayonnaise and chewing gum. It's also found in other items like cosmetics, toothpaste, and even sunscreen.

Back in 2012, Arizona State University launched an investigation to try and see how many food items they might find containing the titanium oxide, they looked at 89 common grocery items. They discovered titanium dioxide in all of the samples.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has previously classified this substance as a Group 2B carcinogen, indicating that it could possibly be carcinogenic to humans. Some studies suggest that the material might lead to issues like genetic disorders, neurological dysfunction, and possibly cancer.

The researchers at Bingham found that after chronic exposure to the substance, that it contributed to diminishing the absorptive projections that are located on the surface of the intestinal cells. With continued exposure and fewer intestinal cells (microvilli), the barrier is weakened and less effective. They also suggest that it contributes to slower metabolism and makes nutrients more difficult to absorb.

The researchers say that while the substance might not kill you, they wanted people to be aware of the possible subtle effects that could be inflicted with chronic exposure. Their work furthers previous research in this area which has already investigated the possibility of microvilli being altered by titanium oxide nanoparticles.

The FDA currently deems the substance to be safe and quite literally trying to avoid ingesting this material is said to be next to impossible, because it is used so ubiquitously it's very difficult to avoid.

Researchers suggest that if you want to try avoiding the substance, then trying to avoid processed foods is best.

Just one more reason to eat organic. Thanks for an informative post.

so how about chemicals in the soil and gmo seeds :P

Just joking but that is a thing in the US and it shouldn't spread anywhere as far as I'm concerned
