Get Government Out Of Breastfeeding

in #health6 years ago

For any mothers today who might need some help with breastfeeding, they've traditionally had the option to seek out help from lactation consultants working in their area. These consultants could be off-duty nurses, nutritionists, or experienced mothers etc, who are willing to provide their expertise that can help new mothers learn how to navigate the difficulties that come along with trying to feed their baby.

These consultants might help with issues such as mothers experiencing pain while breastfeeding, latching issues, low production, and more. Unfortunately, today there are a few states that have intervened in this market by attempting to licensing the work of these consultants. Some women who have been offering services in this market have been doing it for decades and now that the government wants to get involved that means it's posing a threat to their livelihood and their freedom.

A few years ago, the state of Georgia passed a bill that would newly require all lactation consultants in the region to obtain the appropriate license before they could work. Prior to that bill being passed it is alleged that the state had roughly 800 or more lactation consultants who were actively working and now they could be facing a shortage, because many of those consultants will be unwilling or unable to meet the new licensing requirements.

To satisfy the state they would need to engage in at least 300+ hours of clinical experience, along with completing roughly 2 years consisting of at least 14 different college-level courses; as well as pay any license fees.

With the new rules, it's estimated that roughly 90 percent of current consultants would be unable to serve their community.

Several years prior to state lawmakers passing this new bill, a regulatory review committee in Georgia had investigated the potential impact that such legislation would have and they concluded that introducing such a licensing scheme would not improve access to care and they saw no evidence of harm caused by an unregulated lactation consultant market.

That review board overwhelmingly insisted that the state should abandon their licensing plans but we know that this isn't the route they ultimately took.

Who Benefits?

As far as who will benefit from these new rules being imposed, universities and other educational venues in the region certainly might see an uptick in business if they are going to be active in providing health courses on the subject and meeting that new need for those in their community who can no longer access a lactation consultant.

It's also alleged that the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), will benefit greatly as they are the only group that has allegedly been given the authority to issue licenses in the state of Georgia and they'll allegedly be making hundreds of dollars from each of those license purchases.

Fighting Back...

Some lactation consultants have filed a lawsuit against the state, specifically the agent who is overseeing the licensing boards. They say that the new rules are unconstitutional. Attorneys working on behalf of those suing the state have insisted that attempting to license these consultants does zero in the way of boosting public health and safety. Quite the contrary, these regulations will deteriorate their quality of life and they'll harm the public as well by making it more difficult for them to seek help.

For now, the state has agreed not to enforce that new law regarding lactation consulting pending the outcome of this new lawsuit.

If they hadn't made that decision to put enforcement on hold, anyone found in violation of those new rules could have faced a penalty of $500 per day if they were to continue working and offering their services to others in their community.

Wow this is as blatant as they get about handing us over to people that don't give shit about public. Or maybe this is just another tactic to bring people under the thumb of big brother. Maybe we'll soon be needing a license from them to have sex and after that to breathe and eat.

The most appalling fact in all this is that it was specifically found that unregulated lactation consultancy ecosystem was not harmful and neither was their any benefit of imposing regulation found. I mean if there was ever a red flag for manipulation (by those who benefit), then this was it.

Licenses like this are an affront to the freedom to live a natural life.

Thanks for writing about the issue. I hope it is successfully challenged.

This is totally ludacris. Just another mode of control fro BIG BROTHER. The fines imposed on "unregistered" consultants is infuriating. F***, what has this country come to !!!??

they gotta make their money.....for our safety 😂

The term "Lactation Consultants" is quite funny for me because it is just natural for mothers to feed their child and a doctor can just simply educate the nursing mothers what to do. But they have to do this kind of burden for those mothers.

yeah i hadn't heard about that one until recently 😂

"These consultants could be off-duty nurses, nutritionists, or experienced mothers etc,"
"These consultants might help with issues such as mothers experiencing pain while breastfeeding, latching issues, low production, and more. "
So you think it's just natural for a mother to feed their child and have all this knowledge as soon as they give birth? Like, have a baby, them BOOM you're an expert and naturally know how to care for your babies every need? I wonder if you think "optometrist" is quite funny because it's natural for people to have eyes and a doctor can simply educate people about them.

Out of curiousity, are you a guy? And young? It's very typical of someone not in a certain group to say how 'natural' or easy something is to do. I broke a finger a few years back and you'd think it's natural to move your hand and the doctor could just educate me, but nope, I had to have hand therapy for months because what should have been natural, wasn't. And I've heard people who have never been addicted to anything say that meth users should just quit because it's easy. It's easy to make judgements and assumptions about something you yourself have never experienced.

Oh, and you also assume that a doctor, a General Practitioner, will know all there is to know about the human body to educate people. They don't. I can't speak for a GP's knowledge about babies and mothers but I do know that when it comes to psychological issues most GP's are honestly pretty darn clueless about how the mind really works, but they're great at pushing the 'chemical imbalance' lie and writing a script for the latest blockbuster brand name psychiatric drug after the sexy sales rep offered kickbacks and bribes if the GP sold more drugs regardless of the patients actual issues.

I am agree with this sate completely. It is the burning question now today!

In every country, our each & ever Government & NGO's should think & taken effective steps as soon as possible so far.

the laws should be for the benefit of the majority, unfortunately they are always looking only for the benefit of a few, in this case it is delicate because we talk about breastfeeding there are babies who need it and many people who have years of experience doing this Breastfeeding work, I hope that everything goes well and and that the government can not get their hands in here. As always interesting information @doitvoluntarily
