RE: Introduction to Various Meditations #2: Body Scan Meditation

in #health6 years ago (edited)

Absolutely great, only wish that I could Resteem! Did add to Facebook however. People need to know about you.

Curious about two issues;

  • Why inhale/exhale to a count of 7? Is that a Vipassana teaching or a personal preference?
  • Why laying down? Again, Vipassana?

Coming from a different teaching, breath was never more than 6. Not sure why. Also, preferred to laying was either sitting or standing so that the practitioner would focus more on the body part as opposed to the relaxation of the entire body.

All things said, truly looking forward to your body scan meditation a time or two to give it a whirl. Super excited to try new techniques. Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks very much!! I have many techniques planned but I want to make sure I'm taking the time to make the posts clear. In that light thanks for your questions they will help improve my posts- the count to 7 is personal preference, I've always just been counting at a speed and at a rate of breath that feels natural to end at 7. Laying down is important for the body scan as opposed to sitting or standing, because those postures require a degree of stretching or balance however slight- the body scan is meant for sole focus on breathing and sensation to relieve as much tension as possible. Thank you so much for the encouragement!

Any plans for more posts? Really like your content.

All the best.

Many posts on the way, I'm in the process of moving and changing jobs. Thanks for checking in!

I have to say meditating sitting upright is quite different from laying down. Body scan feels great in savasana (laying on your back) and it will definitely relax and nourish the body. But when we lay down, purely from the perspective of the body physiology, mind tends to be not as sharp and awake. For transformative practices I prefer sitting upright. If you can sit upright fairly comfortably, erect spine really makes a big difference in your level of "wakefulness". I'd say try it both ways a few times and see if you notice any difference :) As Buddha said "don't believe. experience for yourself". As crypto traders say "don't trust. verify"
